    Semi-P Sandpiper? SW Scotland

Very interesting discussion and thanks for all the comments. This was my first ever American peep so there's been a steep learning curve but interesting to follow. Hopefully Ill be able to use my new understanding of these birds in the near future..... Regarding the webbing, when I first saw...

    Semi-P Sandpiper? SW Scotland

I don't think Im lucky enough to get one of them at the same time!! Just added a video of this bird here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJ6GHHUsV-0 Not great quality (lot of wind noise) as it was taken using compact camera hand-held to scope with brisk southerly wind in my face. Shows it with...

    Semi-P Sandpiper? SW Scotland

Here's another 3 shots, the light was awful so a lot of my shots are blurry but thankfully got enough good ones (better than my commoner wader photos!). Gavin

    Semi-P Sandpiper? SW Scotland

Thanks Tib78, to be honest I had it down as a Little Stint for quite a while but the lack of obvious white stripes (V's) on it's back got me wondering if it could be something else. I had also seen a juv Little Stint about a week ago and there just seemed to be something different about this one...

    Semi-P Sandpiper? SW Scotland

Found this bird at high tide this evening at The Wig, Loch Ryan among Dunlin & Ringed Plover. Wasn't 100% sure while watching it but having reviewed my images it obviously has webbing between toes. Am I right in thinking its a Semi-P Sandpiper? (rather than Western...) Gavin

    Gull Scotland

Hi Craig, Ive attached my most recent images of the possible hybrid. It is the primary pattern which seems to rule out a typical argentatus, assuming they are the same bird. Gavin

    Snipe Underwing - D&G, Scotland

Thanks for everyone's thoughts and discussion. It will go down as an interesting, probable Common Snipe and an example of potential variation. Obviously trying to ID from a photo is often impossible, but in this case without taking the photo it would have gone over our heads as a definite...

    Snipe Underwing - D&G, Scotland

Thanks for all the comments. Ive attached a poorer photo of the birds upperwing (my only other picture), which may help rule out a species!?! Or confirm it to be Common. The main reason I became interested in the underwing pattern was because I understood Wilson's to be similar (uniform...

    Snipe Underwing - D&G, Scotland

Last week I was at the new RSPB reserve, Crook of Baldoon, near Wigtown. As the tide came in a lot of Snipe were getting flushed along with a single Jack Snipe. I started photographing some of them as they went overhead, and then when reviewing them found the Snipe which Ive attached. To me it...

    Yellow-legged Gull? Strathclyde Loch, Scotland

Thanks for your comments lou and tittletattler. I had a horrible feeling hybrid might come up, would be my second in a few months. If this was a pure Herring Gull, do I assume it to be an Argentatus given the darker mantle? Any other thoughts from others?

    Yellow-legged Gull? Strathclyde Loch, Scotland

Found this gull today at Strathclyde Loch, which was obviously darker than the Herring Gulls and lighter than the LBBG's around and had yellow legs. Im assuming it to be a sub-adult Yellow-legged Gull? Any comments greatly appreciated! Gavin

    Yellow-legged Gull? - Scotland

Certainly an interesting gull that would definitely catch me out if I saw it now without seeing its winter look. Ive attached a couple of pics from October when it was still growing a few primaries, and also some shots from February this year showing less streaking, its small size compared to a...

    Yellow-legged Gull? - Scotland

I believe I have been seeing this bird since about October last year when I initially took it as an Argentatus (without seeing primary pattern). However in December I got shots of its primary pattern and noticed the large amount of black, this along with the heavily streaked head and neck got me...

    Pipit sp., Wigtown, Scotland

Thank you all for the ID clarification and comments, a very scarce bird in D&G so a nice bird for my list!

    Pipit sp., Wigtown, Scotland

Thanks Brian! That's what Ive been thinking, but others Ive talked to have been a bit more cautious, so it would be interesting to see what others think?

I found this pipit and thought it looked a bit like a Water Pipit. What do you think?

    Gull Hybrid? Glasgow, UK

I was thinking Argentatus instead of Argenteus due to its paleness, mainly because Ive read that they are the ones that develop a lack of black in primaries as an adult. But to be honest I don't know how pale argenteus could be as a 1st winter's? Gavin

    Mealy Redpoll? Clyde, UK

Your last bird "IMG_4002.jpg" appears to show a metal ring? I believe there have been two Mealy's rung in a Hamilton garden and another 4 in another Hamilton garden (along with 280 Lessers). So there are certainly Mealy's around in your area!!

    Gull Hybrid? Glasgow, UK

Thanks JanJ, So presumably an L. a. Argentatus (Scandinavian bird) rather than a British bird? Gavin

    Gull Hybrid? Glasgow, UK

More shots showing the tail pattern. Gavin

    Gull Hybrid? Glasgow, UK

Found this 1st-winter gull at Hogganfield Loch today (29/01/2011) which reminded me of a Herring X Glaucous Gull hybrid due to the pale primaries and tertials. Also the tail showed no obvious dark band and the whole bird looked generally pale and larger than the Herring gulls present. Any...

    L. a Argentatus? D&G, UK

Saw this gull on the 28/29th Dec 2010 at Loch Ryan, but haven't been able to sort a definate ID. The dark mantle made me think a scandinavian bird but then seeing the lack of white in primaries got me confused. Could it be a sub-adult (4th winter?) or a dark argenteus? Any comments greatly...
