Just thought I'd update. I dipped my toe in the water with another of these back in May and having used extensively and can now say I am pretty pleased with it. Most of the owl shots on my FB page were taken with it including the facial 100% crop at ISO 3200 (if memory serves)...
I have now tried out my buddies 7d2. The results are amazing. Super sharp. AF tracking immense.
There are clearly some duff focusers. Several people have contacted me having returned them with a similar story.
I will probably hold off now until the bad eggs are weeded out or Canon work out...
I would agree. If mine had focussed consistently then the AF tracking alone was sensational. Perfectly usable up to ISO 1600 and the images seemed to have a great range of colours and tones. My buddy has a 'sharp' one and he's coming next week. Can't wait to try it out.
Well Canon told me to send them my printer(?) for calibration so I decided to return the camera to the retailer as faulty. They took it back without fuss.
Thank you so much for the link. Seems there are hundreds of us suffering. Thought I was going mad! Anyway I contacted Canon earlier today so lets see what happens.
Yep I dot tuned on the rook attached previously (before the shot). Same crappy results
The results were +1 for a 500 and 1.4x and -1 without the converter.
Yesterday whilst playing I took some shots from liveview and noticed they were cleaner and sharper.
Today I did a more structured test. The results are below.
Any thoughts?
EDIT 100% crops
EDIT I have also tried some single AF shots and the results are the same.
I have a friend arriving Tuesday so will try his out and then will also try on some other lenses. The keeper rate is slow low there must be something amiss. Surely. I really want to love this camera!
Several times I was able to track individual birds through flocks of other birds. And Long Tailed Ducks can shift... very impressed with the AF tracking of BIF albeit in good conditions.
Not on my experience...
If you wait another week you can buy mine!
Was out today in -2, burn't through two batteries for about 1000 images with typical chimping. I would normally get close to 2000 out of the 5d3 from one battery.
Loads of shots out of focus by different amounts. AF point is...
