Good News! Trump's Intended Bird-killing Rules To Be Revoked

Ridiculous that we ever had to take the step backwards, to then be corrected by this step forwards. https://www.audubon.org/news/biden-administration-says-it-will-revoke-trump-rule-let-companies-kill-birds

    Blue-and-white or Zappey's Flycatcher? - Beijing, China

The MacKinnon and Phillips field guide for China isn't very helpful either. They do not mention intermedia at all, and their illustration of cumatilis shows a very dark throat - much darker than what is in my images. Mark Brazil's Birds of East Asia is similar. If they were all I had to go by I...

    Blue-and-white or Zappey's Flycatcher? - Beijing, China

LOL I meant intermedia. The indeterminacy of all this has affected my spelling ability :)

    Blue-and-white or Zappey's Flycatcher? - Beijing, China

Apologies for having two threads on this - I posted here first and then realized there is a forum for bird IDs. So it is discussed there too. The issue is a B&W supspecies indetermina (now that is, sadly, a damn accurate designation!) which isn't listed in eBird.

    Blue-and-white or Zappey's?

Site was Xiaolongmen National Forest Park, and eBird records for both species are there.

    Blue-and-white or Zappey's?

"Curious to know which you think it is." We saw this bird with a professional local ornithologist acting as our guide, someone who did his field work in this geographic area. He identified it as Zappey's.

    Blue-and-white or Zappey's Flycatcher? - Beijing, China

June 2, 2018, at a site about an hours drive or so west of Beijing. I think I know which it is, but my ID has been challenged. Any insight is appreciated!

    Blue-and-white or Zappey's?

I am 95% sure on my ID of this, which agrees wtih what the local guide there, an ornithologist, called it. This was taken near Beijing in June 2018. I have had this ID recently challenged so I would like some other opinions. Thanks!

Global birding in a nutshell (or is it in an eggshell?) - Bird Families of the World!

I am currently at 206. We dipped on some notable families of the Eastern Hemisphere when we used to live in Asia, so we will be going back. The family goal is taking a backseat to first getting to about 5,400 lifer - enough to claim with confidence that I have seen the majority of species.

5 km challenge - foot slogging birding from home at a time of Covid

Awesome. I love this approach. Last autumn I did a biridng marathon on my own - it really was a marathon, I forced myself to walk 26.2 miles while birding in one day. It was debilitating and I swore I'd never do something that dumb again but I am already thinking about doing it during spring...

I already did! I'm Michael H. I've been trying to get your site some attention via Instagram too, although I am new there.

Anyone else got a plan a and plan b trip?

We exhausted our luck, getting in and out of Brazil last month ago before the new rules were enacted. So it will be domestic travel for us for a while. Some distant relative has a wedding in May in Washington state that we are expected to be at; this means at least tacking on a road trip for...

Public Comment Period Open Until March 1 For US Migratory Bird Treaty Act

There was a thread started by Mysticete back in the summer that is related, here. That dealt with the appalling attack on th MBTA by the Trump administration. I wanted to start a new thread to call attention to an opportunity we now have to help rectify things - for those people, like me, that...

Bald Eagle article, with proposed name change

As indicated, I agree with the "widely accepted' argument here, and that they should in this case leave it be. But in a perfect (better?) world, shouldn't we aim for clarity and consistency in our descriptions and naming? There are, in the Clement's taxonomy, four "bald" species. And just like...

Bald Eagle article, with proposed name change

Another irony here is that, in appealing to the dictionary for evidence of "bald" meaning "white"... from Merriam-Webster: 1a: lacking a natural or usual covering (as of hair, vegetation, or nap) his bald head Both men were bald. a bald hill bald trees The rug was bald with wear. b: having...
