    Glow on Underside of Ruby-throated Hummingbird's Lower Mandible

    In my photo session with a male RTHU today I noticed something that I have never seen in a Hummingbird photo before-- a neon red glow on the underside of its lower mandible. This is evidently a reflection of his gorget, but perhaps adding to his "attractability" to a female. What do you think...

    I have never seen a bill that glows like this. It a appears to be a reflection from the gorget, but I wonder if the male RTHU uses this as an added factor in attracting females. Have any of you noticed this before?
