    Mallorca 2016

Steve I saw the Coot from the wide bridge [past the Centre at the far end of the track] on 4 June. Excellent views of the Falcon from the Tower Observation Point [even further away] on 10 June. It was heading towards the main road but I lost it behind the trees so don't know where it went...

    Mallorca 2016

I had a Gull Billed Tern at S'Albufera on 4 June. All the usual otherwise. An Egyptian Vulture over hills at km 4/5 on the road to Soller from Puerto Pollensa was nice yesterday. Quite a few Red Kites and Vultures in that area too. I presume Black Vultures but they were fairly distant.

Morning All Just a quick note to say that the farmer at Cresswell is experiencing difficulty at times because cars are being parked in the wrong places. He has a tractor and large trailer to navigate along the farm track to the road and has pointed out the obvious dangers to parked vehicles if...

    Northumbrian Birding

Hi Steve I think it is useful to keep the information coming. I will certainly be in contact with Natural England about Cresswell because I think their stance is silly. I'm hoping that there is consensus somewhere which will allow you to make inroads into the high water levels at Chevington...

    Northumbrian Birding

I went for a walk this afternoon to see whether I could catch up with the two Waxwings that have been seen in the Stobhill/Coopies Lane area this week. Imagine my surprise when I spotted them opposite the NCC Depot!! Not the usual Bob Biggs form... They occasionally flew to a few berries...

Wader surprise I was in the Bamburgh area today so had a look at a site mentioned on RBA in recent days [Hoppen Kiln Flash]. It looks excellent and my first birds were 4 Garganey, including one Drake. You need a scope as most of the birds are distant. 2 Wood Sands were next on the agenda and...

    Kenya - Nov/Dec 2013

4 Dec We arranged a late check out so had breakfast and then went to the Harbour area again. It was very birdy. Ten species of wader, plus excellent views of both Crested Terns, Sooty Gulls and a Slender-Billed Gull. We drove towards Gongoni Salt Works and stopped occasionally. In the distance...

    Kenya - Nov/Dec 2013

3 Dec Our last full day and we decided to spend it in and around Arabuko Sokoke Forest. An early start meant that we were through the Gates before the ticket office opened. So, we looked around but saw very little until Jonathan caught sight of a Golden Rumped Elephant Shrew. We made our way...

    Kenya - Nov/Dec 2013

2 Dec An early start saw us making our way to meet David Ngala. Jonathan had arranged for David to check out possible sites for Sokoke Scops Owl. This proved to be another day of highs and lows.... We were on the edge of the Arabuko Sokoke Forest for most of the morning. Earlier, David had...

    Kenya - Nov/Dec 2013

1 Dec Happy Birthday to Steve! Well, it might have been a better one if he'd been allowed to stay. We started our coastal trip early morning with a visit to Mida Creek. I'd asked Jonathan to time our visit to coincide with low tide. Even though that meant we had a "sticky" walk out over the...

    Kenya - Nov/Dec 2013

30 Nov Early morning birding from the balcony, looking out over the waterhole. Beyond that area, the bushy environment made it difficult to spot most of the birds - but not the Kori Bustard that strolled elegantly around the place, looking as though he was the boss! A bit of hassle between a...

    Kenya - Nov/Dec 2013

29 Nov "Did you hear the rain?" were Andy's first words as I came back into the living world. I hadn't and went on to say that there would have been no nets out if it was that heavy. Just then, a knock at the door with Richard's voice very clear..."Get up, it's lifting with birds out here". A...

    Kenya - Nov/Dec 2013

28 Nov We met Jonathan and James after breakfast and started out on our trip to Tsavo West. There was a fair amount of traffic in Nairobi so progress was slow but eventually we reached the outskirts and then it was just a question of sitting there and letting the miles go by. As lunchtime...

    Kenya - Nov/Dec 2013

27 Nov We had planned to go to Nairobi National Park. I received a few texts from Steve, suggesting that the Embassy could come to his rescue so hopes were high. Of course, that didn't materialise in the end. We met Mike Davidson at the Main Gate just after 6 30am. I had met Mike on a couple...

    Kenya - Nov/Dec 2013

I thought I would detail the highlights [and lowlights] of our recent trip even though I will prepare a more detailed report for consumption elsewhere. We had a really good trip overall but it proved to be a nightmare for one of the chaps. Read on for the gory details. 25/26 Nov Four of us -...

    Northumbrian Birding

I was at Stag Rocks this morning. I looked for the Phalarope for more than an hour without success. Just as I was getting back into the car, it flew in [not into the car...], The tide had turned by then and was fairly well in. It was 1220 when it appeared. Also, Great Northern Diver flying...

    Northumbrian Birding

Hi Gary It gave me a surprise today as well. Still there, along with the waders you mention, plus distant Long Tailed Duck and Velvet Scoter. Budle Bay had at least 3 Little Egrets and a Peregrine dropped in for a successful lunchtime take-away! Slav Grebe at Chevington North Pool and two...

    Northumbrian Birding

Pec Sand still at Bothal at 1025 this morning. With 2 Snipe and a Dunlin, looking straight across the pond from over the hedge on the back road. Often hidden in the grass just to make life more difficult.
