I agree, to some extent. My 8x30B (serviced by Zeiss in Wetzlar a couple of months ago) is certainly darker than a modern roof, and the contrast is lower. The sharpness in the image center, however, is *excellent*. I don't no many modern roofs than can compete with it in that compartment.
You're only too right. Porros *don't need* phase correction and dielectric coatings, and even though ED glass objectives are nice, some of the best binoculars ever made do without them. Waterproofing is nice - but in many situations not really essential, as long as the bins are showerproof.
