    Canon RF 200-800mm IS USM

Yes I agree with all you say here. Heat haze (to use what is clearly the incorrect term) is an absolute scourge. I'm happy with the 100-500 for flight shots, I wouldn't really be looking at the 200-800 for that, just for the extra reach at the 600-800mm end for stationary birds. Maybe I should...

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

Can I ask what cards people are using for the R7? I bought a couple of 256GB cards which write at 160MB/s and they are proving totally inadequate when using the electronic shutter. I get a couple of seconds of burst and then have to wait over 30 seconds for the buffer to empty.

    Canon RF 200-800mm IS USM

Thanks. So far I've just got the R7 and 100-500 and I'm liking it but obviously the area where it is a bit lacking is reach. Just wondering how would be best to solve that problem...

    Canon RF 200-800mm IS USM

I was thinking of what it would be like more for things like terns on a beach or divers on the sea rather than Bullfinches and Siskins. If it doesn't work well with the converter then it won't really offer much of an advantage over the 100-500 + 1.4xTC but if you can get good shots at 1,792mm...

    Canon RF 200-800mm IS USM

I was wondering about this. It'd be interesting to see how it performs on birds at 600-800mm + 1.4x.

    Lens repair

Yes that's the problem, none of the main repairers are interested because they know they won't be able to get spares. But the spares must be out there somewhere I would think, it's just whether I can find anyone willing to give it a go. I might end up selling it for spares on ebay and putting...

    Lens repair

Already tried them and it was Wes who replied to me in fact. The reply was no can do I'm afraid! I've tried various places that I've found on Google, I've found a couple of places who said they will take a look but can't promise anything, unfortunately not that close (one in Cambridge and one in...

    Lens repair

Thanks, I will e-mail them. I did try the Lens Doctor but got no reply and the website seems to have disappeared. As you say it does look like he's ceased trading.

    Lens repair

Yes, Fixation won't take it. Not sure if its the age or the size of the lens with them, but when you put the details into their repair request form it says they can't do it.

    Lens repair

Bit of a long shot this but I'm struggling. I've got an old Canon 600mm F4 lens from the early 2000s (so mark 1 I guess) which has developed a focusing fault. Does anyone know of someone who might be able to repair it? Most places I've tried (including Canon) don't want to know because of its age.

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

Hi Steve, earlier on in this thread I notice you were less complimentary about the R7 than some others have been - has your opinion changed over the past few months?

    Birds in flight (again)

Many thanks for taking the time to write this detailed reply and as someone who has experience of the effects caused by strokes (not to me, thankfully) I wish you good health.

    Birds in flight (again)

Just been looking at this - very tempting! But then I'd need a new lens. All my lenses are Canon. Is it possible to get an adaptor to fit a Canon lens on an Olympus body? A quick search suggests most adaptors work the other way round.

    Birds in flight (again)

To be honest I'd ruled out the R5 on the basis of cost. The guy who I sometimes bump into who is on at me to get an R7 claims that the R5 (which he has) is great but has loads of features one doesn't really need for bird photography. Any opinions about the R6? The person I spoke to in the...

    Birds in flight (again)

Thanks all. This has stemmed from a trip to Long Nanny in June where I spent some time photographing the Arctic Terns (no, I didn't see the American Black Tern) with a 7D and a 400mm f5.6 lens. Considering how many shots I took and how obliging the birds were the success rate was very poor. Even...

    Birds in flight (again)

Looking to (possibly) get a mirrorless camera for birds in flight. Something that will make a decent job of locking properly on to, say, seabirds taken on a pelagic trip. Never used mirrorless before. Someone I know suggested an R7, someone else I spoke to recently said the R7 autofocus isn't...

What view of a bird do you need to consider it "Checked/Ticked" off list?

I've always done that too, only added birds that I've seen to my life list. It's a bit random though, some birds, Quail being a good example, are easily identifiable on call and are a bugger to see. There is only one species on my 'heard only' list - River warbler - and I've never added it to my...

    UK Dragonflies & Damselflies 2022

At least 2 still there on 16th July. I've seen records from NE London and the Norfolk Broads recently as well as the regular site at Longham Lakes in Dorset. Looks like a bit of a concerted attempt at colonisation to me!

    White-letter hairstreak

Yes I clearly mis-remembered that bit.

    White-letter hairstreak

Think I've found it finally - I'm thinking of Hadleigh country park and the station is Benfleet.

    White-letter hairstreak

Looking for someone to jog my memory - where is the White-letter hairstreak site in East London that's within a few minutes walk from a train station?

    Bird of prey sighting

Large raptor over my mum's house in South-east London on Sunday at about 5.30pm (I was there for Mothers day so no optics and no photo). All dark, longish tail, broad, rounded wings with obvious round pale patches on the primaries. I think it was a Crested Caracara and therefore an escape, but...

    RIP 'Dipper'

I'm not sure I ever knowingly met Dipper but that documentary certainly brings back memories! I've just re-watched a bit, it's even crazier than I remember. I'm in the Yellow-billed Cuckoo twitch - I can be seen pointing at 44.56. I don't remember the infamous car incident too well, I think I...

Could it have been ringed on Shetland? Don't they ring on Unst?
