    Starling Nest

Thanks Kits. Looks like theyre going to be around for a few more weeks yet!

    Starling Nest

A piece of wood dislodged from my gable bedroom window and the remaining 'hole' has been inhabited by two Starlings for the last four weeks. Our 'noisy neighbours' have been building their nest and, having looked at my book on birds nests, appears to be quite a structure. They're still bringing...

    Mixed Bird Seed

I took you and Kits advice and went with Garden Wildlife direct. Looks like a good seed mix to me and the birds love it. Thanks.

    Black Backed Gulls

Well, that was a bit of a rollercoaster! Much obliged to you all. As an aside my son in Australia (South of Melbourne), who is also a bird enthiusiast, just sent me this photo of a bird in his neighbours garden. It's a Tawny Frogmouth so he informs me.

    Black Backed Gulls

Apologies for asking too simple a question. I do have field guides but sometimes looking in a book doesn't always compensate for actual expertise. So I wasn't looking for free advice, just some interaction with other birders. But I respect your view all the same.

    Black Backed Gulls

Thanks to you all, it's given me a better idea of what to look for and the video was most useful.

    Black Backed Gulls

Can anyone give me a simple way to distinguish between Great and Lesser Black Backed Gulls apart from size?

    New Camera

Not sure whether to post this here or in the Nikon Category........ My old Fuji Finepix Bridge camera gave up the ghost (Internal battery dead) and I'm looking for something similar as a replacement to take some bird shots. I've narrowed it down to two, based on ease of use (I'm no expert) and...

    Blackcap

Just managed to get a few almost passable pics that people might be able to recognise. Is it a female blackcap?

    Blackcap

Just saw my first Blackcap yesterday in my garden just south of Aberdeen on the coast - I know, not very exciting, but a first for me. Didn't really recognise it at first but then realised it was a female with the brown cap. Took a pic with my phone but not good enough to post on here - my old...

    Mixed Bird Seed

I bought some Sunflower Hearts and the birds don't seem as interested as they do with all the other food (Mixed seed, Suet pellets, Mealworms Fat Balls, black sunflowers seeds). They also seem to have 'gone off' the Peanuts and the Niger Seed. Am I giving them too much choice? Actually saw a...

    Birds don't like my Peanuts!

I have quite a bit left of a batch of Bird nuts which they don't seem to like in the feeder! In fairness they don't look great, fairly dull and dry looking. Is there anything I can do to 'perk' them up a bit and make them more appetising for my feathered friends? Or is it the bin for them? Never...

    Mixed Bird Seed

Thanks everyone - lots of helpful advice there.

    Mixed Bird Seed

Thanks Kits. Does that mean the birds discard the shell so there's a mess with the seeds?

What's the difference between Sunflower Seeds and Sunflower Hearts

    Mixed Bird Seed

I'm looking to buy a 12.75Kg bag of mixed bird seed from Amazon and I'm not sure which brand to go for, as the reviews on all of them are (like the seeds) mixed. Anybody got any suggested tried and tested brands?

    Niger Seeds

Just sent off for some Sunflower Hearts so I'm going to give them a go . Using Amazon at the moment but can't decide what to get in the mixed seeds varieties - reviews very mixed and mostly from before 2020 so don't trust them.

    Truck and car Binoculars

I used to keep a pair of Bushnell 12x25 in the car, but they weren't too good (my father in law found them in the local woods some years ago), so I reverted to my original binoculars I'd had since about 1966. They're old Military Officers binoculars from 1945 - 6x30 Bino prism no 2 mk 3 - almost...

    White House Sparrow

    Not at all.

    White House Sparrow

About September 2019 I spotted a White looking House Sparrow in my back garden. It turned out to be a Leucistic variety of the species. I was reliably informed by the RSPB (Scotland) that it wasn't an Albino, as it didn't have pink eyes. I continued to see it regularly feeding on most days in...

    Niger Seeds

Interesting, I used to get Bullfinch, Greenfinch and Chaffinch on a regular basis a number of years ago but now only see the occasional Chaffinch. Even had a Sparrowhawk and a Merlin land on my lawn a few years ago - not a very big garden either. The Nyjer seeds seem to be a bit hit and miss...

    Niger Seeds

Hi everyone Just a quick one about bird feeders again. I bought some new Bird Feeders in January and the birds were reluctant at first but now use them all the time. However I had an existing Niger Seed feeder which attracted mainly Golfinches and Siskins pretty regularly, but they seems to have...

    Bird Feeders

Hi there, this is my first post so hope I'm in the right place. I hang all my bird furniture on a large mature Escallonia bush in my back garden and it's usually alive with birds most of the time. Generally the common garden visitors. However the bush was getting quite large so I had to get it...
