There are more professional oriented PMR radios using a digital variant, but they are much more expensive. And better suited to sending position data to a centralized server.
So I imagine it wouldn't be suitable for this purpose.
But CB radios are bulky and much more expensive while these PMR radios are much cheaper, more robust and they can fit in a pocket.
And even cheap ones (say, 60 euro a pair) have a surprisingly good speech audio quality.
