I suspect that on the plant on the left the sepals are more widely spread than in the plant on the right. Also the 3 tepals that form the hood look to be longer on the left hand plant. Rich M

Back cross helleborine This plant is thought to be possibly a back cross of E. x schulzei with E. purpurata. When it is growing it looks very much like a Violet, although it flowers slightly earlier than the other Violets at the site, but the flowers are atypical for a Violet. Rich M

Yes, Broad-leaved helleborine. Dark Red has narrower, more folded leaves clusted together at the base and frilly bosses on the lip. Flower colour is unusual for Broad-leaved though so I can see why you might plump for Dark Red. Rich

Yes, although at the dark, heavily pigmented end of the range. Rich

Ideally we need a close up of the flower and a photo of the basal leaves but from what I can see if doesn't look like a Dark Red but a Broad-leaved helleborine (they come in a whole range of colours). Dark Red doesn't grow south of Derbyshire whereas Broad-leaved is relatively common in the...

Epipactis x schulzei This is a third plant, flowering 12 days later than the other two. Rich M

Epipactis x schulzei Both of these are E. x schulzei, the hybrid between Broad-leaved and Violet helleborines. The photos were taken between 10th and 20th July and show how the flowers age. The name of the photo shows which plant and the date taken. Rich M

Probably just suffering from a chlorophyll deficiency, maybe because of stress caused by the dry conditions (hence why the buds withered). Alternative is it has some genetic imbalance, in which case it will be yellowy each year. Rich

I agree it looks like a Fragrant hybrid. Not so sure about the other parent, looked at my pics of SMO x MF from Kenfig and the lip on those looks totally different. I wondered about CSO? Rich

No they aren't. Spur looks quite long? And there don't seem to be many bracts for a Dact? Rich M

I was going to mention the variation in CF x CSO. At Sheepscombe I've seen them in two different areas and they both looked different. When is the book due? Looking forward to it. Rich

One further question Simon, are there any Fragrants at the site? CSO can occasionally have quite odd lip shapes, I've attached a couple of examples. Rich M

But note how the caption talks about the long curved spur, which your plant seems to lack. Try the Common, there are normally a few hybrids scattered about. From a distance they look similar to Fragrants but when you are closer you can see the lip is marked. Rich M

Hi Mike yes I had heard about the Serapias, isn't it a private site or something? I also saw something about a Fragrant x Pyramidal in Wilts, was that confirmed? I'll PM you about what groups I need to join on Facebook to see these discussions. Horror of horrors I've just set up a Facebook...

Unfortunately Jeff most of the field guides ignore hybrids, although one that does cover them is the Lang 'Orchids of Britain' from 1980. That says that CSO x CF has 'spur very long and decurved, flowers scented' People have mentioned that maybe in this case the parentage is reversed so giving...

Jeff notice how the Sheepscombe hybrids have quite a long curved spur, showing the gymnadenia influence. I don't see this in the East Tilbury plant, personally I'd put it down as a Common Spotted with and odd shaped lip. At least it's nice to have something to discuss on here, it's been pretty...

Pyramidals Earlier in the week I did my annual pilgrimage to see the colony of Pyramidal orchids on the edge of Bristol. There are about three or four hundred plants along the verge and roadside bank of a main road. It is amazing how variable the flower shapes are. The majority of plants are...

The middle and the left hand photo were both taken at the site mentioned in the BSBI article. The right hand photo was taken at a different site, in the same general area, the difference being that this site is only supposed to hold Greaters - most of the plants there do seem to fit Greater but...
