Hi Everyone, I was birding with some friends this past weekend and are embarrassed I am unable to ID this bird. It was flitting around on the ground along with other birds of the same species. I live in northeast Texas.
I heard this bird before I saw it. It had a beautiful song. Similar to a Wood Thrush. It was foraging on the ground in a horse pasture around 9:30 am in a little town south of Madison, Wisconsin USA.
Thanks!
This bird was very distinctive to me. Could it be a Harlan's? Just wondering if anyone else had any opinions. The website on the recent discussion of the distinction was quite interesting. thanks for all the input!
Thanks for the info on the forked tail. That will be a good indicator for me next time. Although I agree with Alex the color between the two (with the purple now IDed) is quite contrasting. Just surprising to see them for the first time after 3 years of dedicated birding to this area and never...
I stopped feeding safflower because the doves love it and most of the other song birds don't care for it except for the cardinals. Although they like the sunflowers, in my opinion the safflower seems to really attract them to the feeders. Have you tried feeding thistle or a high quality mix that...
This finch arrived at my feeder a few days ago and I'm having trouble deciding if it's a Purple or House Finch. It visits the feeder early in the morning, around lunch and again in the evening, but never stays long at the feeder. Do Purples have forked tails? This bird has a forked tail...
I finally got some good shots of some Cedar Waxwings. They are usually perched at the top of trees and are hard to get clear photos of. This morning the were flying back and forth from my pear tree to a puddle in my driveway which allowed for these photos.
Others species seen today:
Brown...
Although some of these species are easily spotted, due to the times I had to take my vacations I had just missed them in migration. Got to see the Whooping Cranes though.
Black Rail- thought I saw but couldn't confirm
Bufflehead Duck
Vermilion Flycatcher
Green Jay
Yellow-headed Black Bird
I'm searching for a new camera strap. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would like one that crosses over the shoulder and allows for ease of photographing. Any input is greatly appreciated.
Happy to add my input. Glad to to learn about an unfamiliar species, Sanderlings. I will check my photos from the trip to see if I have some as well. Enjoyed your post!
I've been on that same trip and really enjoyed it. On the boat ride to see the cranes I noticed a lot of Willets intermixed with the other birds. I can't say for sure, but that is my guess.
