    UK - Kent - Elmley : Bunting

Hi, Bunting seen today at Elmley Nature Reserve. Other Reed Buntings seen and easily identified, but this bird, seen twice, is quite different. Lapland Bunting? Sorry for poor quality photos. Thanks in advance. Derek

    White-eye? Dorset UK

I might be going mad - is what I saw even possible? At Arne in Dorset on the south coast of the UK this weekend. In a tree full of little birds - tits, etc - I spotted what I thought was a Goldcrest, based on general shape and size. When I got my 'nocs on it though, the little bird quite...

Lost chick - NW London, UK

Hi, I ran over and almost stepped on a young bird with the wheelie bin last night. Felt obliged to take it off the dark path and away from the cats, so it slept in a box in the kitchen last night. Now it's back outside where parents will hopefully find it. Seems quite lethargic to be a...

    Elmley Marshes, Kent, UK

Hi everyone, There were a bunch of Oystercatchers on the ridge, so I was thinking this might be one of their chicks? But aren't Oystercatcher juvs much darker? Could this is a Godwit chick? Or something else completely? As you can see it is about the size of an Oystercatcher, and has a...

    Bunting - east England

Hi, Is this potentially a Lapland Bunting? Seen outer east London today. There were at least three on the fence, and possibly up to 20 more in the reeds and bushes that flew off at a sneeze. Thanks

    UK Kent Dungeness

Evening all... What's this please? Can't find anything similar in the bird books. :-( She's about the size of a dunnock. I'm assuming this is the female. Her partner is slightly darker and greyer above. They were in the grass hopping around picking out insects. Many thanks

    Wader ID please UK

This one seen at Dungeness today. About the size of a Lapwing. Behaving generally like a wader. It was on the other side of the water, so photos strongly cropped. Your thoughts please?

    Sparrow or Linnet? UK

Spotted at Rainham today, both sitting high in the shrubs. By elimination, I'm about 80% it might be a Linnet, but no red and wing is a bit different to my books. Am I completely off track? What do you think? TIA Derek

    Grebe UK

Thought this was the Slavonian Grebe, but now not so sure. Is he just in the process of changing to Summer plumage perhaps? Or is this something different. I know (s)he's not a Little Grebe because of the red eye, and bigger. Seen at Dungeness, Kent, on Sunday. Your thoughts please.

    Best value for money? UK

We all hate these questions... I know nothing about the bino market, so what's the best bang-for-buck binos in the UK? I want them for birding and I'd prefer the 10x range. I carry a heavy camera most of the time, so the binos should be relatively small and light. I'm a cheapskate, so £100 or...

White duck - Thames London UK

Partly white duck, which I suspect is a Mallard. Thought we'd got lucky and found a Smew at first glance, but it's obviously not. Yellow bill, red/orange legs, patchy white/dark brown body and wings. It was hanging around other Mallards. Seen today at Riverside/Ferry Lane on the Thames...

    Garden Warbler? Nightingale? Oxfordshire UK

Sorry for poor photos - didn't have the big lens with me. At first thought this might be a Dunnock, but the forked tail??? Also wasn't behaving Dunnock-y. Seen in the OWL (Oxford-Woodstock Line) little nature reserve on the outskirts of Woodstock today. Thanks

    Grebe - Rainham, UK

Only took one photo for the heck of it. Assumed it was a Little Grebe. But after seeing the video of the Black Necked Grebe in Kent on bf today.... Photo taken 4th Jan at the furtherest corner of Rainham Marshes. I know it's not a great shot. The light colour above the eye is what's giving...

    Dunlin vs Sanderling, Cornwall UK

Not a question for this forum really, but this photo answered the Dunlin / Sanderling debate for me. Hope it helps others. Dunlin in the foreground has a longer beak and is brown particularly around the head and neck. Sanderlings in non-breeding and juvenile plumage. Thanks everyone that...

    RSPB sites

Hi, Any thoughts on the RSPB sites in Cornwall? Hayle and Marazion as far as I can make out? Are they worth it? Anything to see there? What's access / facilities like? Thinking about paying them a visit later this week if the weather clears a bit. Thanks

Unusal duck - Epping, London, UK

Any suggestions what this bird might be please? Seen at Connaught Water in Epping Forest, north-east London, in May 2009. This guy had a damaged / missing right eye.

    Happy silly Season

Greetings all. Derek and Angie here, hailing from the eastern parts of London. Our local haunts are Rainham Marshes and Epping Forest. Angie's the real birder. I just take the pictures - usually for identifying later. So far this looks like a fabulous site, so we'll be checking in often...
