    UK - Kent - Elmley : Bunting

Thanks all. It was the eyebrow and streaky back that made me think it was not a Reed Bunting.

    UK - Kent - Elmley : Bunting

Hi, Bunting seen today at Elmley Nature Reserve. Other Reed Buntings seen and easily identified, but this bird, seen twice, is quite different. Lapland Bunting? Sorry for poor quality photos. Thanks in advance. Derek

Remote controlled by remote/app/computer PAS cameras? help?

Bushnell Natureview? Or google/amazon "ptz camera" (ptz = pan/tilt/zoom) Or what about a GoPro with a remote?

    Carrying Camera and Binoculars

Hi, You might look at the Cotton Carrier - or actually the off-brand copy for 1/5th the price. Like this one: http://opteka.com/mch25.aspx Costs about £30 in the UK. I've been using this with the camera weighing about 3kg (with lens) for about a year, and it's the best way, I reckon, to carry...

    Android Birding Apps

I'm waiting for G-Bird to come to Android. Was told "soon". It looks very impressive on that other phone, and the website has examples of what it is capable of. g-bird.org.

    Holiday to Poole, Dorset.

Just come back from a weekend at Arne - highly recommended. Sika deer are plentiful and active. There are two loop walks in different directions covering field, moor, forest, "sea" and wetland habitats.

    White-eye? Dorset UK

I might be going mad - is what I saw even possible? At Arne in Dorset on the south coast of the UK this weekend. In a tree full of little birds - tits, etc - I spotted what I thought was a Goldcrest, based on general shape and size. When I got my 'nocs on it though, the little bird quite...

Nearest place to West London to see Hobbys'

Hi Bardbirder, I live near the Ricky lakes. Ok - I haven't been out every day, but I haven't seen any hobbys around at all this year. Only saw one here in May last year. Not to say they are not around. There seems to be a dearth of prey like dragonflies this year though. Stockers Lake is...

    Tablet Computers

Hi Mike, I got my Nexus 7 the day before I went on hols to Scotland. It was only on the last day of the trip that I was able to get a decent enough internet connection to download any birdie-related apps tho. Anyway this is another +1 for the Nexus 7. Form factor is good, as I was able to...

Comment by 'Guest' in media 'The Dive !'

Good catch. Would be interested to hear your technique for getting this shot. I was trying similar, but it was near impossible to follow the diving gannet, and the judge when it's about to hit the water.

Lost chick - NW London, UK

Hi, I ran over and almost stepped on a young bird with the wheelie bin last night. Felt obliged to take it off the dark path and away from the cats, so it slept in a box in the kitchen last night. Now it's back outside where parents will hopefully find it. Seems quite lethargic to be a...

Canon 100-400mm IS - How do you carry it around?

I use something similar to John P. There's no point leaving the camera in a bag when photo-hunting. You might want to look up "Black Rapid R-Strap". I think Optech have a similar, cheaper arrangement.

    microsift security essentials virus

I've installed the update, and it took a while to sort itself out. Suspect it might have done a full scan in the background, which is why the computer was sluggish for while the hard drive was thrashing... Seems fine now.

    Elmley Marshes, Kent, UK

Hi everyone, There were a bunch of Oystercatchers on the ridge, so I was thinking this might be one of their chicks? But aren't Oystercatcher juvs much darker? Could this is a Godwit chick? Or something else completely? As you can see it is about the size of an Oystercatcher, and has a...

    lense advice wanted

What about the Sigma 150-500mm? Ok, it's not as sharp as the Canon 400mm, but extra 100mm of range helps with the little birds.

Card Readers to downlad photos onto my PC

I've just bought another card reader as spare. Cost about a fiver on Amazon.co.uk. I've had other similar units and this one seems most robust and can't go wrong at that price. It's called: "eSecure High Speed All-in-1 USB Card Reader for all Digital Memory Cards" Sounds like you may also...

    Bunting - east England

Hi, Is this potentially a Lapland Bunting? Seen outer east London today. There were at least three on the fence, and possibly up to 20 more in the reeds and bushes that flew off at a sneeze. Thanks

    Sigma 50-500mm

Check prices here: http://camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod217.html There's one for £900 on Amazon for Nikon. I sold mine (Canon fit) a couple months back for about £750ish. Good lens - loved the range and the reach. I'd consider the 150-500mm OS which is cheaper, and which they say is as good...

    Laptops

I'll second Mike's suggestion of the bigger screen, Intel i3 or i5, and 3GB or more of memory. You may also want to think about how you store your photos. The laptop's harddrive is an obvious choice for the "primary" location, but an external hard drive (or two) to keep backups and archives...

Whats the best second lens to have?

Canon 70-300mm IS USM? You probably don't want to go less than 300mm for birds - even close ones. The lens also does a reasonable job at macro, although the close-focus distance is about 1.5m. Maybe a macro filter on the front could help in that dept? If you're shopping new, you might...

    18 - 50mm Lens Suggestion?

I like my Sigma 18-50mm 2.8. Current retail is a bit over £300 though I'm afraid. However I did see one in Jacobs shop window at London Bridge for ~£250 .... oh wait. You're in Scotland so that's not at all helpful to you. Anyway, shop around you might find a bargain. Here's a link which...

    UK Kent Dungeness

Evening all... What's this please? Can't find anything similar in the bird books. :-( She's about the size of a dunnock. I'm assuming this is the female. Her partner is slightly darker and greyer above. They were in the grass hopping around picking out insects. Many thanks

    Canon 450D

I watch camera prices here: http://camerapricebuster.co.uk/index.html The 40D is old hat now, so not listed, but I'd still recommend it. Have a look at the Sigma 150-500 OS as an option for a lens. This plus the 40D "body-only" will be maybe £1300-ish and not a bad option for birds. Sigma...
