    ED50 --an excellent tiny scope!

Rotating ring? Hey all, Quick question. I wanted to verify that the angled 50ED has a adjustable ring to rotate the eyepiece mounted end, like the other Fieldscopes. All the pictures I have seen do not show the knob that the others have to make the adjustment.

Trinidad ID - Wilson's vs South American Snipe

Hi all, I found this dead Snipe the other day (hit by a car) and whilst I'm pretty sure it's a Wilson's Snipe (Gallinago delicata), I'm wondering what differentiates it from South American Snipes (Gallinago paraguaiae) (with particular reference to the black post terminal bands on the tail...

Nikon 50ED vs Vortex Skyline 80ED relative brightness

Hey all, I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I'm thinking of getting either a Vortex Skyline or a Nikon 50 ED. Currently i'm leaning towards the Vortex because 1) Larger Objective on Vortex (80mm) vs 50mm on Nikon 2) Wider FOV on Vortex (113ft - 55ft @ 1000 yrds) vs Nikon (84ft @1000yrds)...

    Butterfly photography

Does anyone have any ideas on photographing butterflies effectively. My main problem is that there are many species that always rest with their wings closed thereby making identification near impossible without collecting/killing them. 1)Can butterflies be put to sleep? 2)I'm experimenting with...

    Unidentified Raptor, Trinidad, W.I.

Well the bird was actually videotaped so i have attached a composite of images to give you all and idea of how the bird moved. Additionally, I remember now that, looking through my bins, the bird seemed to have a stripe near to, or through the eye. The bird held its wings level as it flew (as...

    Unidentified Raptor, Trinidad, W.I.

Hi all, This is a raptor that was seen sometime back in 2007 but was never identified. It has pinched in paddle shaped wings and its tail had several narrow bands. The shape suggests to me a kite. Also not pale patches on wing. Location was Icacos, over swamp/mangrove not far from the sea. Any...

Small forest flycatcher - Trinidad WI

What does one call digiscoping through binoculars? Diginocking?

I shoot with a Canon Powershot A570IS mated to a Nikon Eagleview bins. Keep in mind these point n' click digi cameras shoot video at only 30fps so it's harder to "stop" a bird in flight and get enough details for painting. Flight is best recorded by taking stills with an appropriate camera or...

What does one call digiscoping through binoculars? Diginocking?

While i dont take stills directly through my binoculars, I do take video and would encourage anyone to give it a try. I attached some video grabs and they give you an idea of what is possible. The video quality is quite good and (in my opinion) much better than low-med end camcorders I never...

Hello all, Is it worth buying a Nikon Prostaff 16-48x65 Spotting Scope for digiscoping? I know it's not ED. If anyone is using/has used it and has sample photos to post i'd be most grateful.

Glossy Ibis with ring 6PW -Trinidad and Tobago/Venezuela

Here are the photos. The larger "6PW" ring seems to have a white edge to the ends but this may just be wear n tear. Hope it helps.

    Unidentified Finch, Trinidad West Indies

Martyn has suggested a possible hybrid (canary x ?finch). Unless it's an introduced bird from some other part of the world, the hybrid theory is probably the best bet.

    Unidentified Finch, Trinidad West Indies

This bird was seen in an agricultural field in south Trinidad recently. A similar (if not the same bird) was seen last year. Initially thought it was an abberantly coloured Blue black grassquit but the white eye line and white downy feather patch on back is throwing me off. Any ideas?

Black Bellied Plover or American Golden Plover? - Trinidad

I was pretty sure this was a grey/black bellied plover but there was a second browner bird in the group (second picture) which looks to me to be a american golden(due to the dark crown and underparts). Can someone confirm the identity of these for me?

Unidentified Tern, Trinidad West Indies, inland marsh

I saw this bird at a rice field. Slight fork in tail, dark patch behind eye, black feet, short bill. I suspect a Gull billed tern. Any ideas?

Possible Warbler?, Trinidad and Tobago, March 08

Saw this small bird in some mangroves in south west Trinidad (West Indies) in March 2008. It moves like a warbler. Note the pale wing patch. Any ideas?

Glossy Ibis with ring 6PW -Trinidad and Tobago/Venezuela

Hi all, A Glossy Ibis was found with a large metallic ring on the left leg with the code 6PW and a more standard sized ring on the right leg. Found in the Oropouche Lagoon area in Trinidad and Tobago. The bird is probably from Venezeula. Can anyone assist in tracking this bird/tag? Thanks!
