Hi Andy... Thank you for the link and quick reply :)
I could not find it in British Birds and did not how to record on Birdtrack
I think it only allows Unidentified Ducks to be recorded...

Hi John ~ Its ok you were helping with IDing Birds for us ~ I was hiding amongst the 12 other birders on the *Birds for Beginners* course in the hide
I've uploaded the Avocet video with their 3 chicks... here ~ http://www.youtube.com/user/simbirdcom with talk and explanations on birds caught...

Thank you Mary & stonechat1 for the quick replies... I will try both ideas ~ nice and simple solutions... Then I only need to change the water in the mornings ~ Simon :-)
Thank you ~ I'm still learning and happy they are coming to my garden, but it shows how severe the weather is... I wish the freeze would end soon for them all !
Thank you Dave ~ I did not know about the Mpemba Effect... I thought the boiling water seemed to go cold quick !
The link to the RSPB advice page as given me a couple of ideas... I can do two methods:
A. dethaw *ice* with boiling water then add cool water to stop Mpemba Effect
or
B. Plastic...
I'm finding that I need to change the freezing water twice a day...
I'm using boiling water to defrost the frozen water in the stone bird bath and make sure it cools to hand warm... which does not take long, but twice a day as it freezes again !
But I will be at work and can not do twice daily...
