More Fungus ID Hi, Please can someone help to identify the fungi shown in 2 attached photos that a friend has sent me. The only suggestion I can make is some kind of Honey Fungus for the one on the tree stump. Regards Steve

    Norfolk Dragon/Damselflies reports/news

Hi JCL, The Willows were showing around the ash tree next to the pond. They would often be perched on the bare branches of the ash tree as well as nearby reeds. They were best viewed from the side or back of the pond near the ash tree. Cheers Steve

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Natural Surroundings near Glandford A White Letter Hairstreak (albeit a tatty specimen) was showing well as it fed on the nectar-rich wildflowers at Natural Surroundings today. Apparently, individuals have been seen feeding at the site for the last week or so. There was a great variety of...

    Norfolk birding

Breydon I walked out to Lockgate Drainage Mill yesterday at Breydon. The conditions weren't ideal due to the strengthening winds. However, I did get distant views of at least a couple of Rough Legged Buzzards hunting. A female/immature merlin which flew in, harassed a flock of starling and...

    Norfolk birding

Incredible photos of the Rough Legged Buzzard. I walked from Reedham to the Berney Arms pub and back again yesterday. Unfortunately, I didn't see any Buzzards (not even a Common Buzzard suprisingly) or SEOs. I scanned eastwards towards Breydon but to no avail. However, I did have a close...

I had a fairly disappointing and windswept day as well. At least I wasn't the only one :t: Think I am going to head for the Cley area tomorrow. Cheers Steve

    Norfolk Dragon/Damselflies reports/news

Cow Tower There were still 2 Willow Emeralds showing in the autumn sunshine today at Cow Tower Pond. Unfortunately, I cannot get to the coast until the weekend to see the influx of avian delights. A calling flock of Redwing overhead was some consolation though. Cheers Steve

    Norfolk Dragon/Damselflies reports/news

That is a good tally of species. I don't often visit the Terrace Café pond. I will have to keep an eye out for the small red damselflies next summer. Do they regularly occur there? Will also keep an eye out for any Emeralds next time I cycle past. The Broadland Business Park is a great place...

    Norfolk Dragon/Damselflies reports/news

Great photos and thanks for your views on the identity of the terrapins. It is interesting to note that there are no willows or alders in the immediate vicinity of the pond for egg laying, although there are overhanging willows further along the river (which isn't typical habitat with the river...

Willow Emeralds - Cow Tower Pond Thanks for confirming the sighting James. It is always good to have a knowledgeable second pair of eyes out there. And thanks for the nice comment Jim. I also returned myself today (with binoculars). The conditions were quite windy but I did manage to see a...

    Norfolk – Reptiles and Amphibians

Cow Tower Pond Hi James, They were in the pond itself. They dived in the water when I startled them from the edge of the pond. One stayed out in the middle of the pond with just the small part of the shell and head poking out of the water. The other sought cover on the far bank. Judging from...

    Norfolk – Reptiles and Amphibians

Cow Tower Pond There were 2 "feral" Terrapins/Freshwater Turtles at Cow Tower Pond today which leapt into the water. I think they may have been Red Eared Terrapins but I wasn't able to get close enough. Presumably they were released into the Pond rather than spreading from elsewhere although...

    Norfolk Dragon/Damselflies reports/news

Cow Tower Pond There appeared to be a couple of Emerald Damselfly species at Cow Tower Pond today with very pale and prominent pterostigma today. They looked very much like Willow Emeralds (1 male and 1 female) to the naked eye but I wasn't able to get close enough to confirm the...

Strumpshaw Fen There were at least 20+ Common Lizard at Strumpshaw Fen today. They were mainly along the fen boardwalk but also on the timber piles along the sandy bank. Many of them allowed a close approach. Regards Steve

    Norfolk Dragon/Damselflies reports/news

Strumpshaw Fen Managed to see a couple of Willows Emeralds at Strumpshaw Fen this afternoon. Conditions were less than ideal but the sun came out and the wind dropped enough long enough to stir the Emeralds from their hiding place. Also, 1 Common Emerald in the same dyke, Blue Tailed Damsel, 1...

    Norfolk: other insects

Rosary Cemetery Also saw the hoverfly Volucella zonaria feeding on Ivy flowers at Rosary Cemetery in Norwich today. Always an impressive (mini) beast when compared to the multitude of other hoverflies that were feeding on the same bush. There were plenty of other insects around as well for an...

Strumpshaw Fen At the Tower Hide at Strumpshaw yesterday, the low water levels had attracted in 3 Garganey, 4 Little Egrets, 3 Heron, 11 Ruff and a Water Rail. Norfolk mammals

Muntjac in Rosary Cemetery Whilst walking through Rosary Cemetery in Norwich today at lunchtime I was surprised to come across a Muntjac Deer down one of the rides. This is the closest I have seen a deer to the city centre. Although I suspect others may have had encounters closer still...
