Thanks Guys,
I fondly imagine the parents pecking bits off, and passing them to the young. With the greater number of in-nest cameras around the world now, someone must have seen the actual feeding process? BBC, where are you.
Does anyone have a definitive answer to the often rumoured tale that if whole peanuts are fed to young birds it will harm them? Both views are on offer from various sources, but it would be nice to have some real evidence. I lean to the view that the parent birds are not that daft.
Many thanks /
Hallo All....
We are a month on, and the stupid bird is still at it! Doesn't seem damaged but there is a huge amount of energy involved in flying up, pecking the window, and dropping back.
I know what is meant by ' bird brain ' now.
For the past few days I have a male chaffinch that constantly attempts to fly ( in a controlled way) into a window. Contact is made with the beak, and the bird falls away to try again in a few moments. It takes prodigious amounts of energy, and it occurs at an upward angle, not head on. No...
Am I over compensating for the cold weather? All my table feeding birds, Blackbirds, Thrushes, Robins especially are growing very round and fat, or is this possibly caused by something else? Could'nt be pregnant at this time of year, could they?
I am a relative newcomer to this. but your thread struck a chord with me. I have dozens of chaffinches feeding here, and the colours vary enormously. Some of the males are extremely colourful, and cause me to dive in the reference books to check what i am seeing!
Hi and greetings from Cornwall..........
I found it very interesting and informative.
Before I got interested in feathered birds, I lived in the Changi area in Manderin gardens. Can recall seeing a big Boa or similar on the East Coast path when we were cycling, but alas I did not study the...
Thanks Paul,
I can only say you have achieved top class pics with the kit you mention, and it's results that count! I have been into the camera scene a lot ( long before I got interested in our feathered friends) and owned a lot of gear, including Hasselblad medium format. The 2 things you...
Great pics
Hi Paul,
Congratulations on the stunning pics on the nature watch site, and indeed your general presentation. I am familiar with your area having previously lived at Hatfield Peverel before ' emigrating ' to Cornwall!
If it's not a secret, I would be interested to know what...
Thanks Chris, I had a read of the site you mentioned and it seems the numbers just increase in the warmer months - The ones with a bit of sense head off for warmer climes in our winter!
Just spotted little egrets ( looking a bit lost) on the Restronguet creek near the Norway inn, Cornwall. I thought they were supposed to be summer visitors??
Hallo Ditch,
Many thanks - I really appreciate your useful comments, and as you say, it gives me something to think about....
I am more than content to make steady slow progress in this business..
Seasonal greetings
AL
Many thanks for those tips - extremely interesting to read, and feeds my enthusiasm even more!
I have got a dozen or more species of birds as regular visitors to my bird table and feeders, and several nesting boxes which the birds, tits especially, are already checking out in December. I want...
Anyone out there in the UK have any tips re the design ( and strategic location) of different boxes to attract nesting birds? I am particularly looking for little tips or wrinkles learnt from experience, and have studied the usual publicised information on materials, opening sizes, and...
Thank you all for the very informative replies... I have relied on an old Readers Digest publication '' Birds of Britain '' which has served me well. Have annoted it with sightings of a large part of the book over the years, but when your'e hungry, you can't get enough information, it...
I am in Cornwall
Apologies for the ' newby ' nature of this thread, but would appreciate any views on the favourite bird book to keep handy on the kitchen table ( i.e. not so much for pocket reference)
I have seen the references to Collins and checked it out on ebay, but there are many...
Many thanks for that...
The name grey wagtail seems a bit of a misnomer to me, especially as the birds are so bright with lots of yellow?? Whilst on the wagtails - the pied wagtail seems to be extremely common and most often seen in or near puddles in car parks etc. Would this be right?
Dave,
Thanks for that - interesting to read..
I am overlooking the Restrongeut Creek in Cornwall, so I imagine the grey wagtails are nesting down in the reeds on the flats there?
Seeing a perky grey wagtail with distinctive dark throat and stunning yellow front yesterday got me thinking about the beauty of it all. It can change the day for me!
You are so lucky in your stunning location! Had a great holiday there some time ago, and got up early to see all the Herons and birdlife feeding down on the sand flats when the tide is out. Got some great pictures too... Magic place.....
Hallo Jon,
Thanks for your interesting comments - will look out for the little egrets - do you think there is a good time, i.e. high water / low water / The latter, I guess, when they are feeding.
I did submit a pic of the last big egg shell to anothe bird site, and someone kindly identified...
