Birding day trips from West London

Tony's blog is a good source of details on recent sightings in Bushy and Regents Park http://regentsparkbirds.blogspot.co.uk/ I also think that Broadwater Lake (Denham on the Marylebone --> Birmingham Snow Hill Line) is also well worth a visit IMHO. Its always fairly quieet yet its good for...

    Birding near Frankfurt

Interesting stuff! I wish that I had asked before I went to Frankfurt and Aschaffenburg a few weeks back. however, though I ended up staying at a Hotel near Frankfurt Airport, I was 5 mins away from a nice wood which was full of birds. Middle-Spotted Woodpecker and Hawfinch were the only...

What is the best mobile phone for birding?

I have a £15 a month SIM only contract with Vodaphone and buy a new Pay as You Go phone when I need one. I haven't taken the plunge on Android or iPhone yet and have been able to get decent results on a Nokia Smart-phone (I've tried various models which have all been around the £90 mark). A...

    Bird recording software

I've been using Birdtrack since I got back into birding around 2 years ago. If you are birding in just one place then it doesn't take long to setup a 'site' and upload a list of sightings. Even less effort to bung in some casual or roving records. The improved upload tools now allow you to...

    Vange Marsh this morning

Well I must say that I've had very good luck this year with my visits to Vange Marsh this year. When I visited in June, I chose the right day to go as the Red-Backed Shrike and Spoonbill were present. On sat 25th, I also managed to pick up a few more year and life ticks. The weather was lovely...

    Peregrine, Trafalgar Square?

Minsmere always looks a bit of a trek by public transport from my part of NW London ...but you're right I should do it and maybe make a weekend of it

    Peregrine, Trafalgar Square?

I empathise completely! Hobby had eluded me for years like Sparrowhawk but once you see them for deefinate its as if the brain suddenly connects with the 'jizz' of the bird and they are subsequently much easier to pick out. I've had 4 Hobbies already this year (unlike just the 1 last year)...

    Peregrine, Trafalgar Square?

I got some great views yesterday (Sunday 17th) - first from Barnes and then from much closer.

    London Advice

If you can get to regent's Park early (i.e. before there are too many dog walkers) there can be some great views of certain birds. http://www.regentsparkbirds.blogspot.com/ The gates open at 5AM.

    Peregrine, Trafalgar Square?

err - you live in Putney and you haven't seen them? I'm rather surprised as there is a pair at Charing Cross Hospital, who can usually be seen at a perch there or often hunting over the Wetlands Centre at Barnes - again just down the road from you. Once you finally see them, I'm sure that you'll...

    SW London locations

Indeed! I only live a few miles north of the London Wetlands Centre myself and the public transport links (at least as far as Hammersmith) are pretty good, but Barnes is still a pain to get to. I assume that you have also tried to other obvious locations out that way, such as - Longsdale Road...

    Kensington Tawny Owl Help

1 Adult and 1 owlet seen this morning between 06:45 and about 08:00, when I had to leave for work. Both birds attracting a bit of attention from both passerines and corvids. The adult abandoned the youngster and left it alone in a tree, from where 4 noisy crows eventually drove it to fly down...

Are Starling's pest's, Bully's and birds no one wants in there garden?

I'm not a fan. Yes the large flocks can be spectacular, but I'm not a fan of the horrible wheezing sound they make and the way that they bully the rest of the birds on my feeders. The sparrows, tits and finches dont get a look-in on the fatballs etc, until the Starlings are full.

    Green-finch numbers.

The birds who visited my seed and peanut feeders so much last year, pretty much disappeared completely over the winter. since the beginning of march they have re-appeared and I've seen around 4 birds on a regular basis close to the feeders (but rarely on them, as the Starlings seem to be bossing...

    Bassenthwaite Ospreys 2011

There was an Osprey reported as having been seen just off the M62 in North Manchester on 2nd March this year - on the Manchester Birding forum http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark?aBID=96752&p=3&topicID=34813708 I haven't seen the same news on any of the other bird information sites that I...

    Bempton Cliffs

If you are looking for somewhere nice and quiet and friendly, then I can recommend St Abbs Head. There are Puffins there ... though the numbers are declining and the folks that I spoke to, who been counting the birds (May 2010) told me that there were only 12 pairs - though there are plenty of...

Durability of the Canon IS Binoculars

I've had my 10x30 for almost a year now and I'm very happy with them. Having returned to birding seriously for the first time since my teenage years, they were my heaviest investment and I went with them in favour of spending twice as much (at least) on a scope. I used to have a lot of...

    Kensington Tawny Owl Help

As you get close to the statue, the birds are normally in the are on the right towards the Round pond, but closer to centre of that green patch bordered by the 3 paths. If you look up in those trees, I'm sure that you will be able to spot the one featured in those photographs. The LNHS offers...

    Kensington Tawny Owl Help

Tawny Owls can also be seen at Lonsdale Road Reservoir in Barnes in the large trees on the Thames side of the reservoir, almost opposite Chiswick Pier http://londonbirders.wikia.com/wiki/Lonsdale_Road_Reservoir_LNR The tree was pointed out to me by a local, but I haven't managed to see the...

    Kensington Tawny Owl Help

Some photos on here might help give you a clue http://hpkg.blogspot.com/ and more here http://hpkg.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html I'm sure that Des has posted fairly precise instructions on how to locate the tree/trees somewhere on his blog, but I can't find it right now - I have an...
