Hi, This bird has eluded me for the longest time (along with the Common Tern). Surely the dark chest bank should rest the case here? Thanks in advance, Howard

Common Tern, Portland, Maine, May 16, 2021 (re-confirm)

Hi, a week ago I posted the following thread: https://www.birdforum.net/threads/tern-portland-maine-may-16-2021.409087/ and it was confirmed (mostly) as a Common Tern, although there were some doubts and request to see more images. But at the time I was on the road and could not process all my...

Hi, I saw a small flock of these terns in Portland, Maine today (May 16, 2021), in the "Bug Light" area of the river/bay. My thinking is Common Tern? A large number of these were reported a few days before in the same area. Thanks in advance, Howard

Mystery flying bird, Northern Virginia, April 24, 2021

Hi, I took this picture today (April 24, 2021) in Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia. At the time I was sure it was a Northern Gannet, which is somewhat usual at this location (not on the coast). But initially I did not pay attention and thought it was "just another gull" until...

    Vireo (?), northern Virginia, April 6, 2021

Hi, I took this picture today in a stream valley in northern Virginia. At the time I thought this was a Red-eyed Vireo. I hears it sing too, and I thought it was the incessant, persistent song of a Red-eyed Vireo. But now I have some doubts. But surely this is a Vireo? Does it look like a...

Hi, Both Carolina and Black-capped Chickadees have been reported at this location (Clarke County, Virginia). I think this is a Black-capped -- an overall more contrasty bird and it seemed larger too. What do you guys think? Thanks, Howard

Just mallard? (Northern Virginia, Nov. 27, 2020)

Hi, I took this picture today in Northern Virginia. The male duck's head pattern seems interesting -- this was taken in the late afternoon, and the setting sun cast a warm tone. But still, you can see the two shades (green and purplish-red) of color in its head. I don't see any other traits...

Hi, I tentatively marked this as a Swainson's (taken today, Oct. 17, 2020, in Alexandria, Virginia, US), but I am not 100% comfortable, the other choice being Hermit. What do you think? Thanks, Howard

Flycatcher, Northern Virginia (Oct. 7, 2020)

Hi, I took these (same bird) in Fairfax County, VA, US today (October 7, 2020). There were a lot of Eastern Phoebes around, but this one appeared to be different (bill color, behavior -- no bobbing of tail). It is a young bird (HY?), I believe. But what is it? Eastern Wood Pewee or empid...

Does this pass as an Olive-sided Flycatcher (Virginia, September 30, 2020)?

Hi, I took some (lousy) pictures of this flycatcher today in northern Virginia. It was high up in a tree. Does it pass as an Olive-sided Flycatcher, or is this just another Eastern Wood Pewee? It seems to have a dark "vest", but it bill does not seem that "stout" (maybe I did not get a good...
