    Trip Reports

Alright, I'll go first. Last week we took the kids up to a farmstay near Maleny in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. One morning there was a commotion in a tree near the deck. A currawong was having a go at a pair of adult channel-billed cuckoos. The currawong soon departed but the cuckoos stuck...

Help ID this raptor - wedge-tail?

I'm hopeless at photography, but ... Today I went out there for the first time for a couple of weeks. I decided to explore the arm of the lake which the eagle always flew away down when I saw it on the move. I found the adult was preening itself on a big dead tree, the brown juvenile was on a...

Help ID this raptor - wedge-tail?

Thanks both. We've had a monster amount of rain here in the last 24 hours, the reservoir level is up a lot, I'll head over there when it calms down in a day or two and see if they're still around.

Help ID this raptor - wedge-tail?

This afternoon I was out at a reservoir just up the road from my house. It's right on the edge of Brisbane Forest Park so gives on to the D'Aguilar ranges, a lot of forest and a lot of hills. I was there because I've been watching a white-bellied sea-eagle which hangs around there. While the...

    advice on new binoculars

Update: The binoculars are great. Sharper than the old ones and easier to focus. I've had them out and about in Brisbane Forest Park the last two days and spotted Jacanas, Purple Swamp-Hens, Striated Pardalote, Intermediate Egret, to name a few, as well as lorikeet-watching duties in the front...

    advice on new binoculars

Thanks everyone for the input. In the end I went for a pair of the Monarchs. They arrived yesterday and I'm really happy with them. Easy to focus with a bright, sharp image. Should be able to take them into the bush for a proper hit-out in the next few days. Ben

Which are your most common birds?

Great thread idea. I'm on the outskirts of Brisbane and heading out the door I can be sure that I'll see rainbow lorikeets, sulphur-crested cockatoos, kookaburras, currawongs, magpies, noisy miners, butcherbirds and masked lapwings to name a few. I've seen pelicans near the reservoir up the...

    advice on new binoculars

Hello I also posted this in the Australia forum but am adding it in here to try and broaden the net a bit. I need a new pair of binoculars. My old ones have snapped. I don't have a lot of cash to spend - $AU200 to $AU300. Initially I was going to go for a pair of Bushnell H20 8x42...

    need binoculars HELP!

Hey everyone. I was going to put this in the binos forum but decided I would be better here so I can get some advice from Aussies about Aussie shops. I need a new pair of binoculars. My old ones have snapped. I don't have a lot of cash to spend - $200 to $300. Initially I was going to go for...

    Hello from Brisbane

Hi everyone I came across this site while hunting around for a new pair of binoculars online as my old ones have just snapped on me. Looks like this is a great place to learn more about birding. I'm lucky to live in a leafy suburb of Brisbane so have loads of lorikeets, cockatoos...
