    Definitely not the green woodpecker, just tracked that down and it's a little too consistent. I'll attempt to get a recording this weekend but it does sound very similar to the cuckoo call posted above.

    Thanks Robin, and all. Next step is to dig out my pictures from Guinea Bissau, a huge amount of birds I couldn't name out there :)

    Excellent link, thanks, found this which is 90% similar .... http://www.xeno-canto.org/108332 Quite a few male cuckoos about in the area, I'd never even considered the female would be so different. Mystery solved, many thanks :)

    Thanks guys, I'm just looking for a sample of a female cuckoo so I can discount that. I have spent a lot of time outdoors and never heard anything like it in years of fishing and travelling. Looks like I'm going to have to start staking it out :)

    All, I haven't got around to catching a recording yet but that is my next task. Is there anything in the UK, Bucks area, that sounds like a kookaburra ? I am hearing something that sounds like this most days at my wife's stables and I'm perplexed. Incidentally, one of the farms a few miles...
