Binocular Comparison: Nikon Prostaff ATB 8x25 reverse porro vs. Hawke Endurance ED 8x25

I got the Pentax UP 8x25 WP binoculars today. They are optically great! The center focus is super stiff to the point that you have to put a ton of pressure on it to turn it and then it slips. I shot a quick email to the company and they said that was normal and it will loosen up over time. I'm...

Binocular Comparison: Nikon Prostaff ATB 8x25 reverse porro vs. Hawke Endurance ED 8x25

Yeah, I recently had to start wearing reading glasses for up close, so my eyes definitely didn't have the dynamic range they used to. So being a little off spec wouldn't be super surprising to me with my eyes, but 17 feet is way off. I can see up to 6 feet or so with my Frontiers.

Binocular Comparison: Nikon Prostaff ATB 8x25 reverse porro vs. Hawke Endurance ED 8x25

Maybe? Although I have seen reviews that have said that the Endurance didn't hit the spec for close focus. My Frontier ED X pair does perform to spec for me.

Binocular Comparison: Nikon Prostaff ATB 8x25 reverse porro vs. Hawke Endurance ED 8x25

I just thought I would send an update. I bought the Hawke 8x25 Endurance EDs and they arrived today. I really like the form factor and build quality, but the close focus for my again eyes with poor close up vision is about 17 feet, which wouldn't work for birding. I'm going to return them and I...

Binocular Comparison: Nikon Prostaff ATB 8x25 reverse porro vs. Hawke Endurance ED 8x25

I should mention, too, that I was mistaken on my main binoculars. They are actually the Hawke ED X, not HD X. And they are really great. I've been using them for 4 years and they have worked out really well. So I am definitely a fan of Hawke from my experience with those.

Binocular Comparison: Nikon Prostaff ATB 8x25 reverse porro vs. Hawke Endurance ED 8x25

Or maybe just buy the Hawkes and return them if the optical quality isn't what I'm looking for. I do really like the form factor better (and the lifetime warranty and seemingly better build quality with the magnesium frame like my Frontier HD Xs). I don't have a ton of space in my backpack as...

Binocular Comparison: Nikon Prostaff ATB 8x25 reverse porro vs. Hawke Endurance ED 8x25

Maybe I'll buy both and give them a try. These are going to be my Father's Day present this year, so I'm doing my research.

Binocular Comparison: Nikon Prostaff ATB 8x25 reverse porro vs. Hawke Endurance ED 8x25

I really wish there was someplace nearby that I could get some hands on experience with these. I'm tempted to buy the Pentax UPs and Hawkes from Amazon and return which one I don't like, but Amazon is so crappy about their return process, that the returned pair will just end up in the bottom of...

Binocular Comparison: Nikon Prostaff ATB 8x25 reverse porro vs. Hawke Endurance ED 8x25

Thanks for the input everyone! Looking some more, I think I might go for these. It seems that a fair number of people like the Pentax binos in this category more than the Nikon with regard to optical quality. For $109, it can't hurt to try them...

Binocular Comparison: Nikon Prostaff ATB 8x25 reverse porro vs. Hawke Endurance ED 8x25

Another model that people seem to love are the Pentax Papilio II, but those are not waterproof and fog proof.

Binocular Comparison: Nikon Prostaff ATB 8x25 reverse porro vs. Hawke Endurance ED 8x25

Hi! I'm looking for a sub-$200 set of compact binoculars to toss in my backpack to have around all the time. I have a pair of Hawke 8x42 Frontier HD X binoculars that I use for birding and love, but would love to have a second small pair. I've been looking around and I'm having trouble finding...
