    Wintering Blackcaps

Has anyone else got wintering Blackcaps in their garden? Over the last week I have had two male's that have been feeding on fat blocks in my garden in Ipswich, Suffolk. They are incredibly aggressive to all the other birds even the Great Tits that normally take over the fat feeders.

    Bermuda 2008

Niels, Stephen, Thank you for picking up on this post. I emailed the Bermuda Audubon Society a while ago for some advice on bird guides and meeting up with some local birders. However, I've not had any response yet. Not sure if this is because email is not being picked up. The website doesn't...

    Bermuda, October 2008

Hi, I am finalising my arrangements for a trip to Bermuda in October 2008. I understand that the Bermuda Audubon Society may have a birding weekend during the month, can someone give me anymore information on this? If any Bermudan birders pick this post up then I would love to hear from you...

    Extremadura April 2008

Alan, John, Edward, Thank you for your help and the sites mentioned. I got hold of the Michelin road atlas today and have started to put names to places and places to itineraries. I think I can probably fill about a month's worth of birding without trying to hard! Already I'm thinking that my...

Hi, I'm off to Extremadura for a week in early 2008, yes lucky me! Can anyone recommend a good road map that will a. get from Madrid to the area and b. let me explore the region. I've read a number of trip reports (including Ruby's excellent trip report for last May 2007) and have a copy of...

    Suffolk Birding

Alton Water, Sat 05 January. Managed to get out for a late afternoon stroll at Alton Water and walked from the Lemonshill Bridge car park along the north west shore towards Holbrook and then back across the fields to Tattingstone. Despite the fading light (hurrah for Leica's) it was great to be...

    Alton Water, Suffolk

Gi, 94 is a brilliant total for one day, even better when just on a bike! Will you be posting your list/ locations anywhere? I'd be interested in where you went and what you saw around the Ipswich area as it's an area I'd like to bird more in 2008. Bill.

    Alton Water, Suffolk

Gi, Happy new year to you. How did you get on in the New Years Day Challenge? Did you just use your bike as last year? Gave Holywells Park a good go this morning and saw 33 species- are you still birding the park? Managed a year list of 70 species for the park in 2007. Hope to catch up with...

    Suffolk Birding

Wednesday, 02 January 2008. Had a great afternoon at North Warren despite the bitterly cold winds. Manged to catch up with the Tundra Bean, Pink Feet and Whitefront Geese as well as some Greylags on the island in the north section. In addition, the large flock of Barnacle (with Red Breasted...

    Half price bird books!

My local "Books etc" (Holborn, Central London) is selling the "Collins Birds of the World" and Stephen Moss's "Remarkable Birds" for half price. Not sure if this is a national thing but anyone looking for last minute Xmas presents or to add to the library may be interested. Cheers, Bill

    DSLR & Leica APO77

Hi, Is anyone using a DSLR with a Leica APO77mm telescope? If so, how are you attaching the camera to the scope and what sort of results are you getting? On a general theme does using a DSLR for digiscoping give you better results that digiscoping with a compact digital camera? Cheers, Bill

    Suffolk Birding

Ipswich Docks, Saturday 17 November early afternoon. Being on-call for work meant that I couldn't go far from home and my work car. Ignoring the pager flashing Penduline Tits and growing bored of watching the tv I decided to wander down to the wet dock at Ipswich and have a walk around to Bath...

    Portland sea watching.

Alan, Thank you for your advice. I've got to drop my partner off each morning for a course that she's attending over the weekend so I won't be able to get to the obelisk early- still may work in my favour as people may have gone home by then ! I'll keep watching the weather and keep my fingers...

    Portland sea watching.

I'm heading down to Portland for the weekend 7-10 September and I'm keen to get some sea watching done (as well as loking for migrants!) Can anyone give me some advice on sea watching from the obelisk area, observatory etc and any other local sites that are recommended. (I may have my four...

    First day with Fuji F31fd

I've certainly found that the camera deals better with images that are closer and with the zoom at it's lower level of magnification. Using my Leica zoom lens (20-60) at anything more than 40 severely affects the end product. With the high magnification being used, together with the camera's own...

    First day with Fuji F31fd

Neil & Paul, Thanks for your advice. I was using the manual mode on the camera and adjusted for light at -1. I did play around with ISO's too. I've only had the camera a few weeks so its still very early days and I've not really played much with A/S either. After reading through the manual...

    First day with Fuji F31fd

Spent the day photographing waders and gulls today and rattled off about 150 images. on my return home and after downloading the images to the computer I was dismayed to see that most of the images were just out of focus or less than sharp. Is this typical digiscoping or can any one give me some...

    First day with Fuji F31fd

Ron, Many thanks for yours and others' advice. Ive copied the suggested settings from everyone and will play with them out in the field. I've read the instructions book a lot more (always helps!) and have got myself more familiar with the camera's set up menus. I'm heading to Norfolk on...

    Abberton & Hanningfield query

Dave, Both sites are always worth a visit although at present both reservoirs have a lot of water in them and therefore, the muddy edges (for waders) are few and far between. Both reservoirs can turn up anything although at this time of year I would expect swifts, hirundines, terns, raptors...
