    Grafham Water

Grafham 03 Jul 2024; evening a few Yellow-legged Gulls around taking advantage of the dead fish washed up. These two were very approachable suggesting previous visitors to the dam. Also a Pink-footed Goose present with the feral geese.

    Grafham Water

Back now from a mid-June Mallorca trip concentrating on Dragonflies and Butterflies; with some nice breeding birds too. (Recommend the Mallorca (Spain) regional Birdforum subgroup, some very committed birders throughout the year.) Grafham starting to show Autumn arrivals; and Yellow-legged...

Maristany; final score. Managed some flight shots of the Plain Tiger on the edge of the mown grass in front of the houses. More of a surprise was finding 2 Goblet-marked Damselflies right by where I had parked in the corner near the first house. They were holding territories and interacting...

    Mallorca 2024

Thanks Mike; I am spinning it out still today, finally managed to visit the Maristany site: I think the time we called it Tucan Marsh; seem to remember seeing a Red-necked Grebe here in around 1984 which would have been the last time I looked here; have obviously been driving past a real gem in...

    Mallorca 2024

28 June ; missed the early edition tonight due to packing for return Sat night, full day around the Albufera; managed to see the Flamingo creche ; from the platform Sa Punta des Vents deck, scope and tripod ideally. I carried on walking to Can Blau bridges and glad I didn't go further as it was...

    Mallorca 2024

I spent around six hours up the Boquer in the end, luckily I had over stocked the fluids just in case; the Balearic Warblers faded away so just one flight view; more frustrating were my attempts to photograph the Striped Graylings in the vicinity of the warblers; quite a few but only active for...

    Mallorca 2024

27 June; late morning at top of Boquer Valley. Two male Balearic Warblers duetting on left slope before you drop down to the beach. Seeing them is a different matter....

    Mallorca 2024

26 June; a day in the mountains above Pollenca; as no cars were parked in the entrance to Mortitx managed to park the Panda 'safely' by the trail entrance which kind of looks like an official parking space(?). As soon as walked down to the vineyard a couple of very low Black Vultures struggled...

25 Jun cont'd Another Black Pennant seen just between car park and Amarador platform and probably the same two Small Red Damsels near the gate/cattle grid just past the platform. A number of darters to identify still ; probably Red-veined and Common; will need to wait for the computer screen...

    Mallorca 2024

25 June - mid-day Dragonfly news; a perfect day for dragonflies. Finally seeing Black Pennants; five or more males at Sa Font sluice; proving to be difficult to approach with the macro lens; the 400mm with 2x has been handy. Also another Small Red Damselfly just along the main path from the...

    Mallorca 2024

24 June; Son Real update.... just had a close fly past of a Two - tailed Pasha just above the Refuge. Heading very fast towards the sea so I will 'run' back down..... I still a litre of water as I work to 300ml/hr! At least I can now buy a proper bottle of wine instead of the house red.

    Mallorca 2024

Thanks Mike M we seem to have a few things in common! I am at Son Real for 2nd visit currently; have been loitering in the area of the Refuge and beach towards the viewing platform hoping for Two-tailed Pasha as per info from the chaps. The sun has hardly broken through yet which isn't helping...

    Mallorca 2024

23 June; with 'cold' grey overcast weather, the conditions were ideal to spend the morning in the Albufera hides (no dragonflies or butterflies on the wing!). Four Gull-billed Terns (a single and then a three) on the scrape from Sa Roca 1 hide. Squacco Herons were frequently flying around and...

    Mallorca 2024

22 Jun; Thanks for the correction; I will check the current status now the football is over! Today has been a full day of Dragonflies around the SW corner of the Albufera ( Amarador & Sa Font). The target was the Black Pennant; but not a hint in ideal weather conditions. Plenty of Norfolk...

    Mallorca 2024

21 Jun; an eight hour slow walk around Cuber Reservoir. Having not seen the Moltoni's warbler at Cuber under the new taxonomic segregation I had this one on my priority list! Back in the day the Cuber Sub-Alps were just list padders coming second place to the star birds the Spectacled Warblers...

    Mallorca 2024

Thank you Derban; I hung on at Abufereta as weather looked unstable. Spent an hour on the Mound for butterflies, another unobtainable Swallowtail , at least my 5th fly past. Another hour watching the 2 pairs of KPs from the hide; I don't think you can get better views anywhere else and the...

    Mallorca 2024

Wed 19 June; my first visit to Son Real; wow isn't it large! I didn't have much plan in place but wanted to try the beach area for potential Two-tailed Pasha butterfly. I think I located the area as indicated by StewB ; to the right of the Mirador near the large navigation beacons . A good...
