Panamania! May 23-June 3 2021: My first visit to the Neotropics

Prologue: May 22nd travel to Chicago. I live near Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin, and while Appleton has a decent-sized airport, connections and limited routes meant that it would cost more money and take more time to fly out here. So instead I booked tickets for a 5:00 am flight through Chicago...

Panamania! May 23-June 3 2021: My first visit to the Neotropics

A couple of years ago, as the big 40 loomed, I decided to pull the trigger and go on my first trip to the Neotropics. This was a biogeographic region I never ventured into before, so was full with entirely new families of bird and mammal to see. For the past decade, a place I was particularly...

Hawaii 2021 - Adventures and Misadventures

Yeah, this trip report did solidify my idea about doing Hawaii as two separate trips, with the first focusing on Oahu and Hawaii, and a summer trip at some point to Kauai and Maui.

Best birding trip you ever went on

Well certainly last week's adventure in Panama must take the cake as single best birding trip, although hopefully sooner than later I will have a better sample of international birding trips to choose from. Within the ABA, my first spring birding trip to Arizona must count, with my second trip...

    Avian phylogeny

I think the best approach is to just develop, below the order level, different benchmarks for different major categories. We shouldn't work on the assumption that all birds are evolving at the same rate and responding to the same environmental changes/disturbances in the exact same way.

    Avian phylogeny

Not sure why there is doubling-down on these set increments (arbitrarily chosen outside of the order level) and the insistence they apply universally across all birds. My take away from the last tree was that the specific approach described above was obviously broken.

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

Finally back from Panama and my brief stay at the Canopy Lodge and much longer stay at Canopy Tower, with my last lifer being a Ruddy-tailed Flycatcher at Metropolitan Park on my very last day. Best birds in no specific order included Sunbittern, Choco Screech Owl, Tiny Hawk, Ocellated...

    Changes at Lynx Edicions

Well...I mean book publication dates, especially of field guides, slip all of the time even without any behind the scenes issues at the publishing company. So may not be related to this current situation, which I am still confused by.

    Avian misnomers

IIRC, Loon for bird predates the usage of loon for a person with mental health issues. If you change it for that reason, well...what about cuckoo?

    No Clements Updates This Year

I would imagine a lot of the overhaul work could be done remotely. As a university professor, though, I can 100% confirm Covid has had a major impact on academics: converting "regular" classes to online only or even worse hybrid courses is an immense amount of work, as just running the course...

    Avian phylogeny

Yes...I agree with everything here It makes sense that events that, say...influence water bird diversity, may not influence land birds so much. Going through a lot of non-songbird landbird groups, the ~ Eocene-Oligocene transition seems to correlate well with family level divergences. Which...

    No Clements Updates This Year

Stuff I have heard from behind the scenes puts it more with the ebird overhaul. I imagine they reached a point of delay where it just made better sense to do one big one in August than do two updates a short period of time apart.

    Avian phylogeny

I mean he is just reporting results...he's not actually creating the phylogenies from scratch. I checked this webpage yesterday, and I think temporal banding clearly falls apart below the order level. I don't see much utility in 6 or so families of songbird. I think a better approach is to...

    Passeriformes

Yeah...I noticed that too. I am assuming no one has come across any justifications? I remember one of the recent big bird phylogenies also had "Graueridae" for grauer's warbler, which is typically just thrown into Acrocephalidae now.

    Avian misnomers

Lord Amherst's Pheasant? Actually, are there any other bird names that include titles, versus just just the last name (or first name sometimes) of the person? White-bellied Erpornis is another one: in contrast to what other Erpornis? Eastern and Western Bonelli's Warbler bothers me, or really...

    Avian misnomers

Oh and a few more: Pittasoma Antpittas are the only antpittas not in Grallaridae. So why are they still Antpittas? They should just be Black-crowned Pittasoma and Rufous-crowned Pittasoma. Also, birds with extraneous words: Black-capped Donacobius: In contrast to all the other Donacobius...

    Avian misnomers

Muscovy Duck...which as far as I know has nothing to do with Russia Slate-colored Grosbeak. Okay, I know "grosbeak" is a name without taxonomic significance...Grosbeaks occur across several families and even within families they are not always closely related. But every other Saltator is...

Bird Families of the World, 17th edition

I have a system where, besides common name, scientific name and date first seen/where seen, I have separate columns for Order, Family, Class, and Subfamily, with tribe where relevant also included in the subfamily category. Every family is shaded either green or blue, alternating colors, and...

What are people's thoughts on Xenops being in its own family and 1 vs 3 families of New World Barbet (e.g. Ramphastidae, Semniornithidae, and Capitonidae)? Olson in his New World Suboscine classification paper proposed recognizing Xenops in its own family, but the divergence time between it and...

    Bullying in Birding

My experience has been that bullying in any hobby is much more common online than in person. Something about the anonymity of the internet, the repetition of similar posts and comments, and the lack of tone makes people who would be great to bird with in real life no doubt complete #sshats...
