    2018 Orchid Thread

Here in Surrey - Bee Orchids starting to go over, Fragrant gone over, GBO gone over, Pyramidal looking good. I visited Mike's current namesakes as well, but unfortunately I don't think any will flower here this year, a combination of them being eaten, and it being too dry I think...

Heath Spotted just going over in Surrey now.

    Mystery metallic green bee

Thanks folks! I was pretty certain it wasn't a beetle, but you might be right; I guess we'll never know for sure!

Southern Marsh at their best in Surrey currently. SM-CS hybrids also looking good.

    Mystery metallic green bee

I saw a large (bumble bee sized) bee, metallic green, fast, strong flying. It was definitely not a dragonfly. Seen in Datchet, Berkshire, UK today. Does anyone have any ideas as to the ID please? I haven't seen one like it before! Apologies but I didn't manage to photograph this one at all. It...

    2017 UK orchids

Military at their prime in the usual location in BBOWTland, as were the GBO and Fly. CSO just coming out. One Green Hairstreak. The Monkeys are just going over and not in very high numbers at the usual location in BBOWTland; but Lady x Monkey hybrid swarm is looking excellent - a few of those...

Not as yet, no. In most years I'd expect them out in early June.

    2017 UK orchids

Man are just starting to come out in Surrey now; but probably at least a week (more likely two) before they're at their best.

    2017 UK orchids

Mils just starting to come into flower in Bucks, probably about two weeks away from their prime yet though. GWOs just starting to go over slightly in Oxon, but still spectacular! I found this one with another unusual lip variant - vaguely reminds me of Orchis papilionacea:

    2017 UK orchids

Does anyone have a good publically accessible Green Winged site in Surrey they wouldn't mind sharing, please? Currently I drive to Bucks or Kent, and that's quite a long trip for something I feel I should be able to see much closer to home... PM's would be appreciated!

    Marsh Orchid, UK.

Yes, as per the others, I'd vote for D praetermissa. If there were spots on the leaves consider the hybrid option.

    Slipper orchid Id.

I'm not an expert, but I think Paphiopedilum callosum would be a reasonable candidate; and if so, it is a native species of Malaysia.

    2016 UK Orchids

Bee Orchids just coming out in Surrey most in bud; the Man Orchids are just starting to go over; White Helleborines just going over; Chalk Fragrant any stage between full bud and prime condition.

    2016 UK Orchids

Park Gate update: Monkey at their best. Early Purples gone over, one or two still good though. Just one Lady, looking good. A number of Fly, mostly past their best. Common Tway prime to early. Couldn't see anything else though.

Green Winged looking good in Kent on Wednesday. Some still to come, but many at their prime :)

ID Help Host flower for Giant Hummingbird

I think John's correct. Mutisia acuminata seems plausible from Google images. https://toptropicals.com/catalog/uid/Mutisia_acuminata.htm

    2016 UK Orchids

Thank you! I'd say the Early Purples are somewhere between a week to two weeks behind last year here; so they're probably flowering around the same time they did in 2013.

    2016 UK Orchids

Early Purples looking good in Surrey now; probably another week to go until they're at their best though!

    2015 UK Orchids

Narrow lipped at their best in Surrey today, and a few nice Broad Leaved too (most of those are in bud though). Thanks for the cool music link Ionh!

    2015 UK Orchids

Last weekend (20/6/2015) I went up to Cumbria, in search of Coralroots, Small White, and the Lesser Tway. Unfortunately the Coralroots were pretty much over at Sandscale, although there were some nice Coccinea EMs just coming out. Elsewhere I managed to find a SWO, although frustratingly it...

    2015 UK Orchids

Poor showing of Southern Marsh here in Surrey today; my local colony usually has 100+, today yielded 10 spikes. The area was unusually dry, which probably explains it. Elsewhere in Surrey some weedy looking Pyramidals. Not as big as they were last year by a long chalk, also fewer in number...

    2015 UK Orchids

Early Marsh are looking good at Thursley (Surrey) today; including a couple of the pale ones. I'll leave the determination of leucantha, orchrantha, or ochroleuca to someone else ;)

    2015 UK Orchids

Fly Orchids at Noar Hill were looking good on Wednesday, the Early Purples are going over, but one was still looking good. Many Common Twayblades at their best too. Didn't see anything else, but didn't have much time to look ;) The Man Orchids are in flower in Surrey too. Sean: Thanks for the...

    2015 UK Orchids

Thank you for the update Dave! I tried for Early Marsh at Thursley on Wednesday (13 May), no Early Marsh flowering there as yet either. At least nothing in the areas I usually see them. Some Odonata up and about though

    UK dragonflies and damselflies, 2015

Thursley is starting to wake up now too; visited on Wednesday (13/5). Lots of Large Red Damsel, 1x Common Blue Damsel, 4x Four Spots (hah), and an Emerald of some sort, and I think a UID Hawker - the latter chose a really handy "fly directly towards the sun" technique to prevent identification...
