Phnom Penh, Cambodia - id help please

So later in the day on January 27th this Tailorbird was seen in Iroha Gardens in Phnom Penh. It is a much better picture than the earlier sighting and, unless I am mistaken, this has a grey back and is good for a Cambodian Tailorbird. If this is the case, is it worth adding the photo to the...

Phnom Penh, Cambodia - id help please

Yes. It was definitely grey in real life. Thanks for the comments.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia - id help please

This is the only other picture I have and this has been lightened. I am not sure that it is helping with the identification. I think it will have to be noted as "perhaps Cambodian". Thanks for the help. Phil

Phnom Penh, Cambodia - id help please

It seems that it is not possible to distinguish the pond heron in non-breeding plumage as there is range overlap and limited distinguishing features - unless someone knows a way! Thanks for all of the comments. Phil

Phnom Penh, Cambodia - id help please

Interesting. 1 would presumably be an Asian Brown Flycatcher. The barring on the tail of 3 threw me. 4 would probably be a Common Tailorbird. thanks for the quick help.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia - id help please

Hello, these birds were seen on 27th January. I am not entirely sure of identification so would be grateful if someone could confirm (or correct) the following: 1. Plain Prinia 2. Plaintive Cuckoo 3. Lesser Coucal (or perhaps Greater) - no sighting of back! 4. Brown Prinia? 5. non-breeding...

drongos - Cat Tien NP, Vietnam

These two birds were seen on 25th January. I am struggling to ID them definitively. The first looks like a Bronzed Drongo given darker face and short tail. The next 2 photos are of the same bird which I think is an Ashy Drongo (but seems very blue). Can anyone confirm please?

Thanks Brian. That sounds good. Your photo is fantastic btw.

Monitor Lizard ID - Cat Tien, Vietnam

Thanks Andy. Given your suggestion I have looked closely at photos of each type of monitor and it seems to me that the Asian Water Monitor has an oval nostril whilst that of the Clouded Monitor seems slightly pointed toward the front. Is that the difference that I should be looking for? I have...

Monitor Lizard ID - Cat Tien, Vietnam

Thanks for the pictures. It seems from these posts that the Asian Water Monitor is quite happy high in trees hough the Clouded Monitor photo is a good match, particularly around the mouth. I am going to say it is most likely an Asian Water Monitor, as they are far more common, there are no...

Monitor Lizard ID - Cat Tien, Vietnam

This photo was taken in Cat Tien NP on 25th January 2024. I am wondering if it is possible to tell if it is an Asian Water Monitor (Varanus salvator) or a Clouded Monitor (Varanus nebulosus). It is very high up in a tree on the banks of the river and looks very comfortable there. I understand...

    vietnam bird id help please

These birds were seen in Cat Tien National Park in Vietnam on 24th and 25th January. I would be grateful for any assistance in identifying these if it is possible. My thoughts are as follows: 1 and 2 - same bird. Black Hooded Oriole? though halfway up a tree trunk seems a strange location! 3 -...

unknown bird in Cat Tien NP, Vietnam

Good call. When you said it I was struggling to see it but, having looked at a range of photos, I see what you mean. The greenish hue of the belly seems to be more evident when pictured in green grasses. Who said "the camera never lies"?

unknown bird in Cat Tien NP, Vietnam

Here are 2 views of the same bird seen in the grass at the margins of Crocodile Lake in Cat Tien National Park on 24 Jan. The distinctive head markings should make identification easy but I can't find anything similar so would welcome some assistance. Thanks.

White browed crake? Cat Tien, Vietnam

this bird was seen on 24 Jan at Crocodile Lake in Cat Tien NP. It has a clear white brow so White Browed Crake ought to fit but the body colouration looks more like a Purple Swamphen. so i can't really find any compplete fit. Any ideas? thanks

clueless - Cat Tien NP, Vietnam

Now here is a challenge. This is an awful picture of an unknown bird taken in low/poor light at distance..but I am intrigued. I can't find anything in my books of a bird of this profile, posture and shape with an orange beak that might have been in the Cat Tien National Park in Vietnam on 23rd...

Lesser or Greater Racket-Tailed Drongo - Cat Tien NP, Vietnam

I cannot tell if this is the Greater or Lesser Racket-Tailed Drongo seen on 23 January in the Cat Tien National Park. It doesn't seem to have the "flat head" of the Lesser but doesn't have the clear crest of the Greater. Is there any way of distinguishing from this poor photo? Thanks, Phil

    kingfisher - Trang An, Vietnam

can anyone help me to id this kingfisher seen on 15th January at Trang An, Vietnam. Seems to me most likely Black-Capped Kingfisher with white band on neck not showing because of posture and angle. But some pictures of White-Throated Kingfisher though I can't see any brown in my photo.
