  1. River Girl

?Bunting, South Padre Island, TX, USA

This bird was feeding with Indigo Buntings at the Convention Center. The photo seems to show blue on the shoulder and tail. The bill suggests it is an immature bird. Lazuli and Painted Buntings were also seen in the area. Can this be a Lazuli? Thank you
  2. River Girl

Hybrid hummingbird? Laguna Vista, TX USA

I photographed this bird today and a few days earlier. It seems to have Ruby-throated gorget developing but also has long, white feathers more like those of a Calliope or Anna's. What do you think? Another birder thought it was deformed based on feathers on the back of its head .

Hawk ID, Cameron Cty, TX, USA

I saw this hawk today on the power post, near Resaca de la Palma. The all white breast and under is expected for White-tailed Hawk but the wing color is not right. Please id. Thank you
  4. River Girl

Please ID Hawk, San Benito, TX USA

This bird was openly in a tree on edge of open lot. Never moved except his head. I thought Red-shouldered but reconsider to juvenile Gray due to dark streaks on breast. I have not found a similar photo in any of my guides. Please id. Thank you

Need hawk ID for CBC, Harlingen, TX, USA

We watched this hawk for 10-15 minutes and only had these 2 views at some distance. I notice the flat head and short protrusion of the bill, color seems uniform all around except for the barring on breast and tail. Thank you.
  6. River Girl

ID migrating goose, Cameron Cty, TX, USA

Today I saw this black-headed goose in a flock of maybe 1000 Snow Geese near Laguna Atascosa. The only black-headed goose in my Field Guide is a Brandt. Hoping one of you can ID this one. I had a mere 300mm lens on my camera so I know there could have been others in the large flock. Thank you.

ID warbler and wren, South Padre Island, TX, USA

This warbler came along our house this afternoon. Maybe a Common Yellowthroat? The wren crashed into a window next to us but was fine and allowed an iphone photo. Is it a Sedge Wren? Thank you
  8. River Girl

ID Western Tanager? Resaca de la Palma SP, Brownsville, TX, USA

This bird was vocalizing above the viewing area at the end of Ebony trail. The yellow bill and wingbars plus yellow flanks seem okay for Western Tanager. And they have been reported for this park. Can you confirm?

Which wren, South Padre Island, Tx

This wren flew into a window at the Birding and Nature Center, right next to us. Thursday Nov 2. It was a bit stunned but shortly flew off after I had taken this 1 phone photo. I’m guessing Sedge or Marsh. Please identify. Thank you.

Help ID flycatchers, SouthPadreIsland, TX, USA

I think 2 photos are of a Hammond's (Lifer) but don't have a good idea about the other. Thank you..
  11. River Girl

    ? Thrush, SouthPadreIsland, Texas, USA

I'm leaning toward Wood Thrush because of the reddish color but the cheek and throat do not seem to be as defined as photos in field guides, yet it seems too reddish for the Hermit Thrush. I'm sure someone in this forum can answer for me. Thank you
  12. River Girl

? Tern, South Padre Island, Texas, USA

I see the yellow bill, dark patch on underwing, and black legs, and no sign of a forked tail. Please identify and why. Thank you.
  13. River Girl

ID Hummingbird, Laguna Vista, TX, USA

Can this hummer be identified as a Black-chinned from the view of the tail marks in this photo?
  14. River Girl

Rufous Hummingbird?, Laguna Vista, TX, USA

There were several hummingbirds in the yard today, 3 with rufous sides and spotted throats, some with red in the center. Maybe 1 is a female, or a juvenile. 1 seems to be a male based on the amount of rufous on the body. Thank you.
  15. River Girl

    Gadwalls? Bayview, TX, USA

Noticeable dark eye line, bill shape but I'm not familiar with the plumage. Seems to be like immature in field guide. Ebird flags Gadwall as rare. Thank you.
  16. River Girl

Hope for ID of this likely migrant in central Maine, USA 2017.

I refound this never identified bird from birding a farm pond September 1, 2017. Not a great photo but the markings on the head are distinctive. Thanks for any suggestions.
  17. River Girl

?Wild duck, Laguna Vista, TX, USA

This duck was with our resident Redhead this morning. The eyeline is striking but I cannot find a duck quite like it. Maybe domestic hybrid? Thank you.
  18. River Girl

ID help, South Padre Island, TX,USA

Are the 2 gulls both Laughing? I don't think I have seen brown heads. And are the shorebirds hatch year Godwits? I believe I recognize the plumage but the bill is not really long, nor colored. Thank you.
  19. River Girl

ID for hawk, Harlingen, TX, USA

This hawk was perched on sunflowers along a vacant field in a commercial area. Most likely is probably Red-tailed but I don't see a red tail or breast-band. Thank you.
  20. River Girl

ID help for plover, Laguna Vista, TX, USA

I photographed this individual, separated from other birds on the flats at Holly Beach. The neck band is incomplete, the bill seems short, the color is too dark for Piping and not dark enough for Semipalmated. Snow Plovers have been reported farther up the valley. I did find adult...

Brown-crested_Flycatcher?, South Padre Island, TX, USA

I have seen Great-crested here and Ash-throated has also been reported. This bird does not seem as bright yellow as Great-crested. Thank you
  22. River Girl

ID warbler, South Padre Island, TX, USA

This warbler is most like a Yellow but is intensely yellow under bill to throat and seems to be mostly gold-buffy under and have a dark tail. I did not observe tail flicking. At the Convention Center this morning. Thank you.
  23. River Girl

ID for a Bunting, South Padre Island, TX, USA

I never saw the back of this bird and could not relocate it after it flew. Bluish upper mandible, light throat, some striation below throat but not on belly which is pale, light eye ring, mottled blue on shoulder, suggested wingbars. Thank you
  24. River Girl

    ?Warbler,South Padre Island, TX, USA

I notice a yellow lower mandible, dark eyeline, eye arcs, very yellow underneath, and there seems to be a white wing bar however I don't find a bird like that in my warbler guide. Likely a female bird? Not a warbler? Thank you.
