Wearing white and talking while birding?

I seem to remember reading somewhere that washing detergents contain a compound that makes the clothes glow in the UV spectrum. If it's true, even clothes that wethink are black must be glowing like a light bulb to birds.

"I have come to see the Bittern"

Trying to see the Muckleburgh olive-backed pipit. The first three birders I asked gave the following three really helpful responses: It's in front of us (so not behind the twitch then. Thanks for clearing that up) It's by some bracken (we were in a clearing entirely surrounded by the plant)...

Twitching by numbers - Book only available on Amazon

Last time I looked I was definitely female Owen e: criticising a book you don;t like is one thing. Bullying the author for 'political incorrectness' until he withdraws his work from sale is cancel culture. BethEngland: it wasn't available yesterday when I went to buy it. To add to the mystery...

Twitching by numbers - Book only available on Amazon

Cancel culture trumps free speech again. Ignore them, Garry and let people decide for themselves if they wish to buy your book, or if they want to have Victorian prudery.

    Baikal teal

Is this the real deal, then? I'm always suspicious of wildfowl.

    Gull, Scotland

Sorry, that was the best shot I could get of the wings; it was raining heavily and very dark, and the camera was a point and click. I didn't like the look of the bill for Caspian either, which is why I posted it here, in spite of the small head and dark eye.

    Gull, Scotland

Anyone with better gull ID skills than me want to confirm what this is, if they can manage it with the appalling image quality caused by holding a 14-year-old point and click camera up to the scope? In the field the eye was definitely dark. The last picture includes a bog-standard herring for...

    Birding trip January

I've been planning a 5 day birding trip for the start of the year, with a view to getting my year off to a good start. I've got two possible ideas in mind: First option- East Anglia: cranes at dusk at Horsey, hawfinches at dusk at Lynford, wild swans at Welney, white-fronts at Holkham, a look...

    Strontian Black Duck

Last April it seemed to be hanging around with a male mallard companion on the shore midway between the Post Office and the War Memorial.

    Norfolk birding

I never knew that (I've never bought a Day permit for Cley). That's exceedingly odd. I can't think of any other reserve that does that!

Where do birders stand to watch the gulls come to roost at Cley?

    PG tomorrow?

I can't get down till Friday morning. The forecasts show the wind swinging westerly over Thur night, and NW by midmorning. Pg, Pendeen or stay home? Advice would be appreciated. I don't know what happens at PG if the winds swing...does the passage continue for a while?

Loch Garten Caperwatch: any sightings this year?

I presented myself at so-called Caperwatch this morning bright and early to enquire as to The Truth. Apparently one brief sighting on the 2nd April has been the ONLY one this year. I for one won't be wasting any more mornings going back. I also learned something else from the staff member...

Loch Garten Caperwatch: any sightings this year?

So basically what Edenwatcher said! They used to when there was a chance of seeing one. AFAIK that was in 2013...

    Kingfisher

I don't know about sites in Cambridgeshire, but in Yorkshire Potteric Carr used to be good; birds fish on the Mother Drain in winter and used to nest in a bank opposite Piper Marsh hide. I haven't been for a couple of years, though. Fairburn Ings is also good; in my experience the Cut Lane end...

    Where's Elvis?

There is a King Eider being regularly seen off Fort George, according to the news services. I also note that the news services haven't reported the regular King Eider at the Ythan Estuary in Aberdeenshire (known to birders as 'Elvis') since a coupe of days before the Fort George bird was first...

Loch Garten Caperwatch: any sightings this year?

Steve: that has been my experience, too. Last time I saw one there was 2013.

Loch Garten Caperwatch: any sightings this year?

The Caperwatch has now been up and running for over a week, and as usual the RSPB haven't mentioned it on their Loch Garten blog. It occurred to me it might be useful if people who have attended the Caperwatch report here each day on their luck, either positive or negative, to give birders...

info for a trip to Scotland in June

There isn't any scenery on the Uists; it's all on Lewis/Harris and is pretty breathtaking. Unfortunately the birds are on the Uists. For harriers and SE owls try the 'Committee Road' which is the small road that cuts across the moors in NW N.Uist. There's an obvious place to park; and you can...

    Yorkshire Birding

Concerning the Friends of Spurn Observatory: I'd be very glad to join now that I've cencelled my YWT Direct Debit, but it seems the only way to pay is by cheque? I don't think many people have cheque books nowadays, and I certainly haven't seen mine for several years. Is it possible to join in...

A Few UK Species Site Questions

On thing to be aware of concerning the Penzance pelagics is that they do cancel them if not enough people have booked. I've been caught out that way. If the winds are right, you might be able to see many of your target species from Gwennap Head, though as you don't drive it would involve a taxi...

    Bogey Birds

Leach's petrel and arctic redpoll stand out as the glaring non-rare omissions on my UK life list.

    Norfolk birding

Can anyone local tell be the best place to view this roof by Howden's Joinery off Burrell Way in Thetford where the gulls seem rather good at the moment? Also, advice on where to park without causing a problem would be appreciated.

Shorelarks at Spion Cop Cemetery, Hartlepool

Does anyone know which area the bird is being seen in this winter? The news services say 'waste south of the Cemetary' but from what I remember there is no waste ground South of the road, only neat grass and tarmac paths and a load of bushes where I saw a dusky warbler in 2013 :)
