Two passerines (warbler/wheatear?), Lycabettus Hill, Athens, 25 September

Think the warbler is a willow warbler but I did not hear it sing. The second one is bemusing me because it looks a bit like a desert wheatear but that's not an Athenian bird. I only got the one shot as I didn't even know I had seen it - I was trying to photograph a tit (coal, I think)...

Is this a bird's nest?, Parnithi, near Athens, Greece

Friend of mine took this pic, then heard chirruping inside, and backed away carefully. Before she mentioned the voices I assumed it was a web of some sort. Is this a nest, and, if so, a bird's nest? It's quite high up in altitude, near mountain forests.

Songbird in Poros, Greece, Jan 2023

Thought it was a flycatcher but it bounced around the rocks for a while looking like a wheatear - red tail undersid should help but I've no idea...

    A chiff, or a chaff

Somewhat disturbing site in the middle of Worksop today - half a chiffchaff... Seemed to be singing and flying like a good 'un. I assume it has moulted its tail feathers, but it also seemed only to have one leg... Birth defect or accident survivor?

Grey-backed passerine, Roseau, Dominica, 10 December

Got from a coach, when really looking at the ostensibly headless dove on the right, but I'm more confused about the little chap on the left...

Laughing gull?, Flores, Guatemala, November 2014

Going through old pics I noticed this rather poor one, but enough to show a white tail underside with black tips. I assume a gull but not a big one.

    Question: biggest genus?

Noticed that I think I have seen ten Corvus and ten Turdus. So I wondered which genus has the most species? I know this is a moving target but would be interested on the general views. Larus perhaps? I tried googling but it kept giving me e.g. elephant birds...

    Songbird, Stenness, Shetland, July 2011

Going through some old pics I found this one which I had not noticed before - grey head, rufous back, pale underneath. Sort of wheatear mask but looks too fat to be one of them. Grateful for any ideas.

    Lovebirds in Gibraltar

Not John and Yoko, but this chap skittering around near the Landport gate on Wednesday. There were at least 2 of them, and I heard them on the Tuesday as well, but had not heard anything more. Is there a feral population there, or would they have been escapes/releases? I only noticed them in...

    Merlin?, Mainz, Germany, July 2020

Direct links because it was very high up and I couldn't zoom in any closer. It did not do the kestrel hover so wondered if it is a merlin... https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50176135906_0e3094fbf9_k.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50176392682_d3e61c6040_k.jpg

Song thrush with black wings/tail, Sutton Park, Birmingham, 28 May

Sutton Park is not the most obvious place to see weird stuff, but this was weird. Hopping around in company with a song thrush. Not a great pic (alas it was very skittish) but the full size version is here. Am I seeing things? Trick of the light? But those wings and tail definitely do not...

    Why no Anseridae?

Just wondering. There's Anser anser, Anseriformes, Anserimorphae. I think all the other -iformes have an -idae to go with them. Yet there is no Anseridae, the geese are all in Anatidae. Should that not logically be Anseridae on the basis that Anser seems to have priority everywhere else? Or...

    Flycatcher?, Belize, December 2014

Any clues on this one? Only got it from behind...was close to the howler monkey sanctuary in the north of the country.

Pipit?, southern Red Sea, November 2013

One of the things about the lockdown is I'm finding pics I've taken of birds I cannot identify. Alas I cannot be more specific about the location of this one other than it was somewhere south of 22N. I think it's a pipit, but whatever it was, it was hitching a ride on board ship...

Slightly anomalous herring gull?, Spitsbergen, June 2012

Hi - going through some old pics I saw I had got a gull from above, albeit not very in focus and not very large. Picture is here: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49694689842_c2517dd877_k.jpg I assumed herring gull, because of the yellow eye and beak, but the wingtip pattern looks a bit...

Brown passerine, Santa Clara, Cuba, June 2015

Going through old pics and there are a couple I cannot identify - this is one...flycatcher of some sort?

Black passerine with sharp beak, Lake Titicaca, Peru, August 2006

Looking through old pics I saw this duo...no sign of any yellow so I doubt they are yellow-winged blackbirds, although they are not far off the shape...

Bird of prey from above, Luxor, December 2016

Looking through some old pics I found a couple of blurry shots of a bird of prey, but, as I was in a balloon, I got an unusual view of it... Slightly forked tail and upper wings in dark and light brown, with white dividing. Wings slightly pointed. Red or black kite in poor light?

Shrike?, Piraeus, Athens, Greece, 30 September

Saw down by the Zea harbour, in a tree near a memorial. Juvenile red-backed? Only ever seen adults before. Wasn't expecting it in the middle of a city either.

Young stonechat?, South Walney, 7 September

Quick check on this one - I think it's a stonechat rather than a whinchat as I saw a couple of the former and none of the latter...

    Great-crested grebe feeding young

While having a piggy-back ride. Not seen this before. Thought it was cute. Logical way of doing it though. (In Cardiff harbour yesterday.)

Whitethroat?, Thorney Island, Hampshire, UK, 5 July

Not sure on this one as I did not hear it call - and then another joined it and was similarly quiet. It did however give some sort of white noise burst, lasting about half a second, repeatedly. The sound coming from its throat as it did not open its beak.

Spotted flycatchers?, Kosovo/Ohrid (North Macedonia), May 2019

Anonymous looking brown birds - could they both be spotted flycatchers? Top one was at the Battle of Kosovo monument, the second viewed from the castle at Ohrid in south-east Macedonia. Didn't see any flycatchery flight though. https://www.flickr.com/photos/41442363@N08/33997298038/sizes/z/...
