    Skua? Norfolk UK

Arctic. Really good pictures from the shore

    Skua? Norfolk UK

Arctic Skua for me based on structure and the pointed tail feathers and also the extensive white in the wing. Would expect Long-tailed to have a much more restricted white primary patch.

    Shearwater? Norfolk UK

That's a fantastic photo, was it taken from the shore or a boat?

    Dark Grey Heron

I photographed this Grey Heron at Porthgwarra, Cornwall on 1st October '23 when the seawatching was truly dreadful. It appears to be very dark, have a very long neck and extensive black cap and it got me musing on why it is a Grey Heron and not a Great Blue Heron. I looked at the literature on...

    Inoculations for Kruger National Park

My wife and I will be visiting Kruger for a fortnight in mid-November and have read very conflicting information on various medical websites about the inoculations required/advised, two in particular: Malaria and Rabies. My own GP's surgery believes both are not really necessary. Has anyone any...

Best bird ID book for South/Southern Africa

Thanks Gareth. That looks like the only option unless I can get it in SA: are there likely to be any outlets in the Kruger Park?

Best bird ID book for South/Southern Africa

I have seen some extract pages from the LBJ Guide and it looks amazing so thank you for the suggestion. Finding a copy for sale either new or second hand is rather challenging. Looks like people tend to hang on to them which speaks volumes!

Best bird ID book for South/Southern Africa

I suspect you will be right as Kruger just one small part and suspect we will only see a small part of that!

Best bird ID book for South/Southern Africa

Looks great Andy. I will have to look at how much flexibility I will have on this trip if the book is going to be useful but I might buy it anyway to plan for future visits!

Best bird ID book for South/Southern Africa

Thank you so much for all the help and ideas, that’s fantastic. Particularly intrigued by the app as songs and calls always difficult in a strange place! Hopefully post some pictures when I get back.

Best bird ID book for South/Southern Africa

Hi, I am planning a short holiday in South Africa in November including drives through Kruger NP. Is this a good time to visit this area and what is the best id book to take with me? I have suggested South/Southern Africa as I am sure to return to other areas in the future so happy to get an...

Unusual Yellow Wagtail, Abberton Reservoir, Essex, May 1st 1988

Thank you for the excellent responses and BBRC summaries and apologies for the delayed response: away camping with minimal signal for a week (bliss!) at RIAT. It is indeed interesting that 'beema and leucocephala-like birds' are assumed to be hybrids which requires confirmation rather than an...
