    Nikon HG 8x30 dissection

I guess you didn’t see that I said the HGs were better but the B3s are Way better that the M7s. Worst 8x30 I’ve ever owned. Suffered from glare everywhere. Horrible. Vipers are nowhere near either imho. A $300 binocular with a $500 price tags because of the Vortex warranty. Horrible build...

    Nikon HG 8x30 dissection

They’re not horrible but might be worth it. For the record my Mavens were slightly stiff I passed through Lander WY last summer and dropped them off there. They were back in a week and very smooth

    Nikon HG 8x30 dissection

The thread that won’t die. I just sold pair because the eyecups were too short. They don’t screw out so I couldn’t lengthen them. The focus wheel is a weak point in my option. I love my 10x42s but both have a sticky stiff wheel. My Maven B3s have screw out eyecups, a smooth focus wheel and...

    New Binocular Bargains Thread

Wish I had caught that deal. Would like to get a pair of 8x42s to compliment my 10x42s. Guessing they’ll do it again sometime though.

    Nikon Monarch HG 10x42

BTW have yet to own a MIC bino that hasn’t had a build quality issue. Maybe they just need better QC. But I just say no for now.

    Nikon Monarch HG 10x42

I’ve owned the EDG. Not bright enough for my purposes. Pretty heavy as well. An upgraded HG would be my preference.

Do Genesis 33mm eyecups screw off?

I know the 44mm models have screw off eyecups but haven’t been able to find out if the 33mm models do. Have looked at Kowas user manuals for both sizes. The 44 manual says they do for cleaning but the 33 manual makes no mention. Guessing they don’t but maybe they forgot to put it in the manual?

    Nikon Monarch HG 10x42

I guess you didn’t read my post. Hoping they are moving HG production to China so they can use the Japanese facilities for a new improved premium model

    Nikon Monarch HG 10x42

I’m hoping hoping they moved them to China so they’ll start building a new improved model in their Japanese facilities. Doubtful but plausible.

    UVHD+ 7x42 Eyecups a Little Short

since the eyecups screw out you can do the o ring trick where you put a 2 mm o ring at the base of the threads. If the there is enough thread then your eyecups will be 2mm further out when fully extended. I did this in my Mavens and it eliminated 95% of the blackouts I was experiencing. Not sure...

    Nikon Monarch HG 10x42

I’m really hoping that someday Nikon will improve the HG. Better focuser, screw out eyecups and perhaps even better optics. Would gladly pay the extra money for that. Maybe that’s why they’re moving HG production to China. One can only hope. And yes I’ve owned EDGs. The noticeable lack of...

    Nikon Monarch HG 10x42

Might be a good time to pick up the refurbished HGs that Nikon has. Guessing they’re the MIJs and the quality on the refurbs is excellent. Only a 90 day warranty but at 30% off that’s like getting a great deal on a used pair that has just come back from the service center. Plus Nikon typically...

Blackouts and objective lens size - 30/32mm vs. 40/42mm

I find that eyecups that don’t come out very far cause blackouts for me. Yesterday I did a modification with o rings to lengthen the eyecups on my Maven B3s just 2mm. It made all the difference in the world. You need a bino with eyecups that screw out to do this though. That feature makes it...

    Nikon USA Service Time?

I’m thinking of sending my HGs for service. Tight focuser and loose hinge. I’m wondering what others have experienced for turn around times. Thanks

Why is buying and collecting binoculars so addictive.

BTW over the years there have been several members that decided enough is enough and parted with some of their seldom used pairs. Often for good prices that allowed those of us with more limited budgets to get nice optics and put them to use. Not saying everyone should do that but it is nice...

Why is buying and collecting binoculars so addictive.

Because it’s fun. Sort of the search for the holy grail within one’s budget as well

    Lee Thickett (Troubador) - R.I.P.

So sad to hear this. Lee was such a gentleman and had an amazing wealth of optics knowledge that he shared so freely. Several times I asked him questions via pm and he always sent me thorough and thoughtful replies. I do know it bothered him when we bickered over silly opinions and especially...

    which 10x42 : Nikon HG / GPO Passion HD / Maven B1.2 / Vortex Razor HD ?

I agree Vortex is a great company and you won’t get anything close to the Razors for $529!

    which 10x42 : Nikon HG / GPO Passion HD / Maven B1.2 / Vortex Razor HD ?

Yes that was my point. Comparing apples to oranges. Much better options in the Viper price range as well imho. And of course the Razor for $599!is a steal. GPO Passion ED, Monarch M7, Leupold BX-4 Pro Guide, Opticron BGA VHD are all better choices than the Vipers imho with standard disclaimer...

    which 10x42 : Nikon HG / GPO Passion HD / Maven B1.2 / Vortex Razor HD ?

Vipers are nowhere in the class of the others imho. Quality control has gone Way down since they moved production to China. When they first came out I compared two side by side at a local store. One had a hinge so loose it wouldn’t stay in place. The other had a focuser so stiff I could barely...

BTW I see the GPO on Amazon UK for 860

    which 10x42 : Nikon HG / GPO Passion HD / Maven B1.2 / Vortex Razor HD ?

My personal ranking would be: 1 Maven by far the best build quality and as good optics as the rest. Bright as all the rest imho and I’ve owned all 2 MHG great optics in a very lightweight package. Wish the build quality was better but it’s not bad 3 GPO Optics and build quality are good but...

    What's your most used binocular?

Nikon Monarch HG 10x42. I’m constantly amazed at how good these are for the price. Very lite as well which is very important to me.

Vortex vs Swarovski vs Zeiss vs Leika bins (~8x42)

that’s exactly what I suggested too

Vortex vs Swarovski vs Zeiss vs Leika bins (~8x42)

And I speak from experience of presenting opinions as facts. Have been guilty of it myself lol
