    Redpoll in Warwickshire

Classification aside, what I find weird is that both my 2 editions of Collins make no mention of Lesser Redpoll - it's like they've expunged the name from the record. It's not as if it's a new name, my old books (T A Coward, 1950, and Collins Pocket Guide, 1959 & 1973) all mention the bird.

I have other pics, but none truly side-on.

    Redpoll in Warwickshire

I've not seen a single bird on the seed feeder outside my window in suburban Leamington Spa this year, until yesterday when the attached showed up! Can someone confirm this is a Lesser Redpoll? I think it's a first for me. It's spent around half an hour filling up before it disappeared. I'm...

    Hey, I'm getting better! Thanks.

Waders, Port McNeill, Vancouver Island, BC, Canada

Can you help id these waders on the foreshore in Port McNeil, Vancouver Island on 6 Sept? My guesses: the first 2 Western Sandpipers, the third a Short-Billed Dowitcher, the last 2 a Least Sandpiper.

Gull, Atnarko River, Tweedsmuir National Park, BC, Canada

Can someone id this gull for me? Perhaps immature ring-billed?

    Whinchat? Boyton Marshes, Suffolk, UK

Whinchat? Possibly two separate birds. Eye-stripe precludes Stonechat I think.

    Warbler? Warwickshire UK

Sorry, no more photos (if I did perhaps I wouldn't have needed to post!). I took this so I could id the bird later on - so that worked out well . There were Blackcaps around so I kind of assumed this was one but since I couldn't see it clearly I took the picture. The woods abound with...

    Warbler? Warwickshire UK

I took this in my local wood. I thought I was taking a picture of a blackcap, but when I eventually came to look at the photo, it doesn't look like one. All brown head? Is it just a common bird in strange illumination?

What gull is this? - Warwick UK

Taken yesterday, 7th April, over the suburbs of Leamington Spa. Not too much sea around here. I was confused by what appears to be a black tip to the bill. Re. name - yes, that would be about right :)

What gull is this? - Warwick UK

I'm rubbish at sea birds, seeing I live in the middle of the country. What is this gull? It was flying around while I was taking shots of buzzards.

    2 waders - tattler + ? (Brisbane, Wynnum)

I also went for the grey-tailed tattler, for the reason that grey-tailed = common, wandering = uncommon to rare. Sharp-tailed sandpiper is also common so likely as well. Thanks.

    2 waders - tattler + ? (Brisbane, Wynnum)

Both birds seen on 23 Dec 2022. Waders are not my strong suit, esp. Australian ones. Any help appreciated. The first (2 pics) I think could be grey-tailed tattler. The other, a small sandpiper?

Keyhaven, UK - are these dunlin?

Thanks. I do visit Brandon from time to time. I should go again, thanks for reminding me.

Keyhaven, UK - are these dunlin?

My shore bird skills are not great - not much call for them in Warwickshire :(. Are these dunlin? Their neck "collars" seem darker and more well-defined than in my bird book, but the bills look right.

    Duck at Titchwell, UK

A query I sent to RSPB Titchwell came back with a definite: Pochard.

    Duck at Titchwell, UK

It wasn't diving, the water was very shallow so it was feeding by just sticking its head underwater. Also I used minimal sharpening so I don't think there are any artifacts. I can post the original (5.1MB)

    Duck at Titchwell, UK

A few although they don't show much more. It was swimming with a ?gadwall.

    Duck at Titchwell, UK

which I guess is most likely, otherwise I'd be reading reports of it?

    Duck at Titchwell, UK

Took this at RSPB Titchwell UK last week. Not so good at ducks, thought it was a weird coloured pochard, now not so sure. Is it possible it's a canvasback??

    What hawk? (in Canada, BC)

What - questioning my memory?? Well, I took your advice and looked at the photo exif data - seems my memory is indeed faulty |:$|. The bird on the stump was taken 22 minutes after the other two, not quite as I remember it, so there's no reason they can't be different birds. I agree the bird on...

    What hawk? (in Canada, BC)

All three are the same bird - the first is actually the last, after it landed.

    What hawk? (in Canada, BC)

I came across these photos I'd taken in Knight Inlet, BC, during a bear watching visit a few years ago. I'd put the bird down as a Cooper's Hawk but now I'm not so sure. I'm from the UK and not too familiar with North American raptors. If I remember, it looked to be after the Stellar's jays that...
