Microphone for android to amplify sound

As discussed before elsewhere here in this forum: The dish (25 cm) is too small to be reasonably effective below 3 to 4 kHz. It needs a dish diameter of SEVERAL wavelenghts (and not only one, as stated by BirdMic: 25 cm wavelenght are equivalent to roughly 1500Hz) to work as intended...

    Manfrotto 190GOA4 + 128RC compatibility with Kowa 883, plus backpack/transport question

I am regularily biking with my Kowa 883 and a Gitzo series 3 tripod (the head is currently a Berlebach 553, the attached photo shows a different one with camera and scope mounted in parallel). For safe transport I am using special panniers made by the (German) firm Koenig (Ornithologen - König...

Gitzo Traveler series 2 for seabirds?

@Elkhornsun: Let me get some facts straight: 1. The West German Government did not "found businesses" in East Germany after reunification. They either sold "inherited" former state owned companies to new owners (often for little or almost no money) or closed them. As an example, the company I...

    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

That is a bold statement. You got mumbers to prove it? I am wearing glasses and can use both Canon IS' (8x20, 10x42). Am I a minority? Werner

Slightly OT: translation from older german.

Almost. Officially the metric system was introduced on 1 January 1872 after founding of the Deutsche Reich in 1871. Regarding the "mill." in the referred text I think it is simply (a continuing) typo, since "mill." is obviously the abbreviation for "Millimeter". And yes, the comma is (and was...

Collins bird guide 3rd edition in an App

The German version book, issue 3, is 38 €, the app is 17.99 € and the app upgrade is 9.99 €. I have them both (book and upgrade), and, frankly, I haven't noticed any problems with the app (on an iphone, much utilised in the field). Maybe there are certain differences between the language...

Looking for Short-eared Owls in Cuxhaven (Suche nach der Sumpfohreule in Cuxhaven)

Hi Josh, For the month of December the German "ornitho.de" website reports 4 sightings of Short-eared Owls (Sumpfohreule) around Cuxhaven (highlighted) and few sightings near my area (around Hamburg) and one in between. Here is a sreenshot: Good luck! Regards, Werner

    Stability in wind

When I imagine 40 mph (about 65 km/h in my metric world) of (probably gusty) wind I might agree with DMW: Go home and have a cup of coffee/tea/whatever will relax you ... In addition, not only will the tripod/head/scope combination be subject to wind forces but you, the observer, will be as well...

    Stability in wind

The other countermeasure would be to lower the leg angle, drive the leg spikes into the ground and use a seat for observing (because of lower position). And have a solid tripod head, of course. That is what I do in such situations (Berlebach UNI and Berlebach Pegasus head with Kowa 883 and a...

    Ww2 binoculars

As far as I know, not all (e.g. optical) instruments used by the German military during ww2 had been marked with swastika and/or eagle. However, it appears that in the "Kriegsmarine" (navy) a swastika carrying eagle and the letter "M" (for "Marine") was quite commenly used (e.g. binos...

    Ww2 binoculars

Actually the company was named "Fuess" (not Feuss, which would be a different pronunciation in the German language, ue=ü). The complete name was "R. Fuess, Optische Industrie, Berlin-Steglitz", manufacturer code "cro" (in later times of ww2 only codes were used instead of actual manufacturer...

    Billingham Galbin

You may consider them as "Alpha" bags (which they really are, I know by personal experience). Then the price may seem appropriate.

Why have helical focusers become popular?

My first thought is: Design. Looks cleaner and less cluttered. My second thought is: Closer to the way photo lenses are operated which many got already used to. However, I prefer the "old style", separate knob(s), preferably coarse/fine setup.

    66A follow up. Questions

My TSN-883 (bought in 2020) coarse focuser behaves in the same way. Honestly, never bothered me.

    883 or 66a?

IMHO you should not be deterred of buying a KOWA scope by these fruiterers here on this forum. ;-)
