    Water being contaminated?

I pyrex dish is a good idea, it'd have sloping sides rather than my current one. I saw a poor bluetit trying to walk down the side, but kept stoping because its too steep. Related to the subject I remember an article about how bronze water containers will destroy harmful bacteria. It happens...

    Water being contaminated?

I am planning on building a pond but I don't know when i'll get around to it. I have to dish raised off the ground on a concrete block. So it isn't raised that much. Still I don't have any starlings come into my garden, at least I've never seen any except in my neighbours trees. I'll put a...

    Water being contaminated?

I always notice bird droppings in the water dish (terracotta pot drainage) I leave out. The birds use it as a bath and for drinking but when they turn tail on the edge ... plop. I change it every day or twice a day or more if I can. So how many bid droppings does it take for a such a small...

Plans & Sugestions for Niger feeder

I'm trying to make my own Niger seed feede from a plastic container. This would save it from going out with the rubish. So I ask; What diameter are the feeding holes? Is there a way similar to standard seed feeders to stop the seeds falling out or is that neccesary? Toodles.

    Building nest already!

If you could find some thorny cuttings and shove them in around over the Nest maybe. I know one is not meant to disturb nest building but with a Robin you may have a bit of a chance. Get someone to distract the Robin with food while your at it? I had a Robin nest in a berberis shrub last year...

How attractive are flies to birds?

I believe it depends on the bird. Birds that are most likely to eat flies catch them on the wing. But I keep my compost heap in bad shape so there's a lot of flies around it and theres birds hopping in and out of it all day long. So in my experience the density of flies would make a difference...

    killer magpies

Only when humans have changed nature so that there nature has become unnatural. Though I don't believe this is the case here. A pair of Magpies nest in the garden beside mine sometimes I look at them and wonder if there evolving slowly into raptors. the idea of it interests me even if it's...

    whats he doing??

I think he was happy he got some food and started singing about it. Males have louder calls when they are in a good location. I'm not sure if they have more persistant one sthough and if he had a mate then I don't know why he would be call in the fashion except for territorial marking.

    Why are Robins so bold?

I read once where in medieval and probably ancient times, people farming and hunting in woodland would of turned up earth, giving robins a chance of gettingan easy meal. I wonder if Robins who showed those traits would of been more successful at breeding and expanded their numbers greatly. But...

What's been in your garden today?

There was the usual house sparrows, tits, greenfinches and I think some young starlings but I can't get close enough to be sure. I fed the cheeky Robin today buy picking out chafer grubs from the ground I was digging over. She (or maybe he) ate one and flew back to the nest with the others. She...

    Odd Robin?

Well I'm sure it was a redwing now though it had a greater amount of red showing than the book illustrates. Even if I had familiarised myself with the description I'd probably still been confused. I hadn't seen one before, I get sort of overexcited when I see a new bird...

    Odd Robin?

Well I've never seen an immature Robin before but I have read in my Book of Irish brids that they have speckled breasts. This Robin had a strongly coloured red breast but with a speckled belly or underneath. The Robin was also big, bigger than most Robins I've ever seen. Was it a Robin, an...

    Bluetits and peanuts

Well, heres my mathimatifications One blue tit needs 11 calories a day One peanut has 1.5 calories (average i assume done with kitchen scales dating circa 1962 and data from "the family health encycopaedia") So 11 calories by 1.5 peanut calories = 7 peanuts a day. If the peanuts are...
