    Birding in Alicante Province

Yesterday had a red-necked nightjar perched right out in the open about 20 meters or less from me near the Santa Pola lighthouse when it was around 21:40

    Birding in Alicante Province

Today have been to Torrevieja, where I saw monk parakeet in the city and enjoyed photographing them for a while, and then encountered obviously escaped yellow-collared lovebird in Los Balcones!

Can anyone suggest a place I should try for eagle owl? Have been unsuccesfull in my attempts

    Birding in Alicante Province

It could have been, although they looked identical, so unless juveniles look the same as adults it could be 3 other birds in addition to the pair. In regards to Torrevieja, are monk parakeet still present at Los Balcones?

    European coracias with hoopoe

A picture taken at the Old Monastery. I was very surprised to see this scene, when two of the birds I was looking for sat together in front of me. I thought that the stunning blue of the coracias found an impressive contrast with the hoopoe's attire.

    Birding in Alicante Province

I'm just back from a trip specifically to see roller. I encountered no less than 5 of them at the Ermita de San Francisco, and got great views of them perching on the wires next to the ruins. One of them decided to perch right next to a hoopoe, and the other bird didn't mind it's company. Other...

    White-headed duck

Enjoyed a lot of time watching this duck at Clot de Galvany. In the very early morning, there was no-one around and I had the entire hide to myself. Very impressed with this reserve- three of this extremely rare duck species was seen by me

    Birding in Alicante Province

Been up the gorge a few days ago. Getting there is easy without a car provided you are prepared for the heat. But this is the worst time to see those eagles- they are best in February and September, I have heard. No wonder I failed. Clot de Galvany yielded 3 white-headed ducks and 5 marbled...

Where to see Fen Orchid in Norfolk?

Hello. Would I be able to see the orchids if I visited Upton this year? Aside from the orchid, could use an excuse to finally get out of my typical sites!

Male osprey goes on a rampage at Lyndon Center

Spent most of my day here observing the ospreys. The three best moments were seeing an osprey hunt, dive straight into the water, and surface with a captured fish, and of course the moment when an osprey flew directly at me as I was making my way between hides. But perhaps nothing matches what...

    Succesfull fishing

A few moments after the Lyndon Center male surfaced and flew off with a medium-sized fish in his talons

    Osprey at Lyndon Center

I was on the way to the furthest hide when I saw this osprey flying directly towards me. Whilst I got my camera to point at it, it began banking, allowing me to take this image

Mysterious duck eludes bird ID guide

Returned from a trip to Lakenheath. I saw this duck there, a picture attached below. Using my ID guide I was able to rule out...every single UK duck. The only one which even remotely approaches is a male goosander, though to be honest is nowhere close. I would love some help!

Terrible-quality photo of an albino pheasant

Saw three of those bizarre birds during my hike from Shippea Hill to Brandon. This was one of the best highlights of the 32-km long trip

    Lynford Arboretum

Thank you for the information. I was hoping it wasn't too late for them, I guess I'll have to find an alternative place given I was really hoping to see hawfinch. I know goshawks have been seen displaying days ago, so maybe will look for them instead. But that stands only if I don't see another...

    Lynford Arboretum

Was thinking of going down to Lynford Arboretum to take pictures of wildlife there. But directions which I've seen are very confusing, can anyone recommend the best places to see firecrest and hawfinch there? I'm not leaving without it this time! Or is there a better place?

    Mandarin ducks

I feel like these belong here in the UK. I am always delighted to see them. But I never saw more than 2 at once, and here, there were 6 waiting for me, as if to distract me from the woodpeckers failing to put up an appearance
  19. Crossbills save the day

    Crossbills save the day

Prior to this, I was torn between Lakenheath (because I saw a crane there from the train) and Thetford Forest. I ultimately chose the forest, and despite a few nice birds being seen completely failed to see lesser spotted woodpecker and woodlark, as well as my ancient camera failing to...

    Curious red kite

This kite met me right as I got off the bus and for the next few minutes was in close attendance and hovered practically overhead, and seemed to follow me for some time. The photo shows one large eye staring at me!

    Amphibian migration

Wow, that's fast. Heard of situations when it took years before that happened

Anyone else got a plan a and plan b trip?

I have a lot of targets, so why not share all of them? As soon as lockdown is lifted: I'll cycle to nearby Stilton to watch the red kites there. May: I'll scour my local patch for places I know reliable for early marsh orchid and white helleborine orchid, and will visit the Rex Graham reserve...

    Scariest birding moments

Probably when I due to my inexperience and stupidity found myself on the edge of a raised mire in Russia and took a step forwards. The good news, I sank only to upper thigh height. The bad news, I thought I had stepped in muskeg and was for that moment seriously afraid I'd fall beneath ground...

    Amphibian migration

It has really been an explosive year for amphibian migration. Some of the things I've seen this year I still can't believe took place before my eyes. It all started with a local visit to my trusted pond in the start of February. Despite it being so early in the year for this to happen, I still...
