    Bird call CDs....advice?

I like the Stokes CDs. I suggest ripping the CDs to MP3 format and then copying them to a portable MP3 player that you can take them easily into the field.

What's been in your garden today?

Had a nice Yellow-billed Cuckoo poking around in the tops of the trees a bit ago. Really an awesome bird. Lots of Blackpoll Warblers still singing, a few Red-eyed Vireos, and a really nice male American Redstart. Now back to work...

What's been in your garden today?

Exciting stuff today. Two new yard birds bringing the total to 67 and new lifer for me, #200! The yard birds were Swanison's Thrush and Nashville Warbler. The Nashville was also a lifer. At one point he (the Warbler) ws within 15 feet of me, staring at me and singing his song. Wow!

    Birds and Light (Printing Problems?)

This is going to be strange, but here goes... I just got a copy of Lars Jonsson Birds and Light Princeton Press. There are a geat number of blank pages and one page that has a caption but no picture. Specifically pp. 182 has a caption that says "Bullfinch" with details of the painting, however...

    your favorite field guide

Well, what a great and "religious" topic! I have lots of NA field guides. My Sibley East is the one I carry everywhere. I have more marks in it then any other as well as having the page edges color-coded to species groups, this is my favorite. I took the Sibley West with me on a trip to CA and...

    Bird Book Bargains Vol4

Bargains for North American Readers Here are two bargains for those of us on the other side of the pond. Amazon has The Firefly Encyclopedia of Birds for $29.99 normally it is $59.95. I do not have it but I remember it got a positive review in a birding magazine a while back. It also qualifies...

What's been in your garden today?

That is the exact bird that got me into birding! It was a dreary April day and my feeders were full of the usual old boring Mourning Doves and House Finches when lo and behold there was a strange bird with red and black and white markings. I looked in my old and simple field guide and saw what...

Comment by 'jeffc' in media 'Ivory-billed woodpecker'

Great drawing. The funny part is that I was searching the web last Wednesday night (4/27/2005) looking for a good picture of an Ivory-billed that I could use as my avatar on another forum I frequent (www.ratebeer.com). The picture I chose was your drawing! Hope you don't mind.

What's been in your garden today?

A huge day, actually only had about an hour to stand in one spot and try not to get whiplash... The Chipping Sparrow count got in the 50s before I lost track! A dozen or so White-throated sparrows, 2 Catbirds, a dozen or more Yellow-rumped Warblers plus all of the usual suspects and finally 3...

What birds can you see out of your work/office window?

Green Herons building a nest. Two "couples" built nests last year and it looks like three are setting up shop this year! This is from the window of my 6th floor office looking down into some trees in the parking lot.

Not Lord God but Damn Beautiful

In deference to the recently rediscovered Lord God Bird I offer this picture of a Pileated Woodpecker that visited my backyard this past March.

    Ivory-billed Woodpecker Re discovered ?

Having now read the Science article I see that the person I mentioned in my earlier post and her husband were thanked in the References and Notes section! So that makes me only one step removed! Tonight will be a night for cracking open a really, really good beer and celebrating! B (:

    Ivory-billed Woodpecker Re discovered ?

More... http://www.birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/ARKS.html#1114655105 Even more interesting. I have an acquaintance that had registered the domain ivorybill.org years ago as her personal site. As of 4/13/05 the Nature Conservancy has become the owner of that domain!!! This is looking more and...

    Ivory-billed Woodpecker Re discovered ?

Well a more credible news source is carrying an article verifying the claim. I am still skeptical but damn that would be a major wow if true. The fallout in Arkansas is bound to be massive if it is true. Every birder with the means and little conscience will be out there looking for it...

Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Home Course

I definitely recommend it stand-alone, assuming that it is the same or better than the old 3-ring binder version. The bound format will certainly be smaller and easier to work with the old 3-ring binder version. It is basically a college-level ornithology textbook with some leanings towards the...

Comment by 'jeffc' in media 'Injured Green Heron'

That is my guess. The bird was feeding without problem and flew off after a while so it seems like it is not in too bad of shape, though the leg does look pretty rough.
  23. Injured Green Heron

    Injured Green Heron

This is an out of season Green Heron who's right leg appears to be injured. There are many snapping turtles in the marsh where this was taken, so maybe that is what happened.

    Chip notes from Washington DC

Yes the Potomac and the C&O towpath are also great places. There are actually quite a number of great places, too many for me to list here! Anyhow, drop me a message next time you make it out this way and I can hopefully point you to some great bird spots. Possibly of interest, the state of VA...

Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Home Course

Echoing the comments of previous posts, I feel that the course is worth the money. However, I as of yet have not finished it! Who knew having a kid was so time consuming! ;) The version I have and probably as well with the previous posters, was the version that is based around about 1000...
