    SE Arizona lizard

Yes, Chihuahuan, Sonoran, and Gila are all in range and difficult to tell apart. I believe that for sure this is not a Chihuahuan, as they have heavy spots and indistinct stripes, while the other two (and this lizard) are the reverse. But I can't honestly tell if it's Sonoran or Gila.

    Snapping turtle in Georgia

Don't live there but this species is all over the eastern U.S. Given the context of the objects around it, it looks fairly large but it is very common that they reach such sizes, and bigger. Up here in northern Indiana I saw one somewhat bigger than that out to lay eggs a week or two ago.

What kind of snake is this? Middle Tennessee

Black Rat Snake is a species name from the older taxonomy (which some people want to keep). The snake looks like an adult to me - for one thing, juv gray rats are typically lighter/brighter in color.

What kind of snake is this? Middle Tennessee

Gray Rat Snake (Pantherophis spiloides). Yes, a Corn Snake is a member of the Rat Snake genus as well, but they have limited range in TN. There is contention in the herpetological community about Rat Snake taxonomy in the U.S., so different people are playing by different rules, and some would...

Wide, oddly smooth grayish-blue lizard in SW Texas scrubland- any IDs?

Looks to be a very well fed, or possibly gravid, Texas Greater Earless Lizard (Cophosauras texanus texanus).

    UNKNOWN, LAS VEGAS, NV 2016

I would call these two different species, the top being Common Side-blotched Lizard, Uta stansburiana. I'm fine with Western Fence for the bottom pic.

    Lizard, Coastal Western Mexico

I really only know and have books for lizards in the U.S., but these really look like some kind of Anole (family Dactyloidae) to me. Problem is, Mexico has over 50 species. This section of bird forum has low traffic, and you might not get an answer here to this one. If you are on Facebook...

snake above bird feeder in Austin Texas

Harmless Western Ratsnake (Pantherophis obsoletus). Beneficial rodent eater - but they will also take birds and eggs. Snake repellents do not work and are harmful to the environment. There is little you can do besides re-arranging how the feeder is hung to make it harder for a snake to get...

    NEW TO Lizards and Reptiles

Brown Anole (Anolis sagrei), male. Invasive. Out-competes our native Green Anoles in many places especially in Florida. Over the past 20 years, it has become hard to find Greens where they were once abundant because of the Browns. A basic reference is the Peterson Field Guide to Reptiles and...

    Tennessee USA snake ID

This is a North American Racer (Coluber constrictor). The dorsal blotches still visible up near the head, and fading as they go down the body, indicate it was a late stage juvenile, hatched last year. There are two sub-species in Tennessee, with different ranges - Northern Black Racer and...

    Snake ID - Ohio, US

Yes. Under current taxonomy, it is called a DeKay's Brown Snake (Storeria dekayi).

Trying to Identify this Infant Hawk

OK - I had narrowed it down to Mississippi Kite or Swainson's Hawk (both white headed as nestlings), but apparently Mississippi Kite is it.

    Hawk, central Indiana

Thanks for the independent verification, which should put the disagreement to rest.

    Hawk, central Indiana

Not my pic, and I have an opinion, but looking to settle a disagreement. Taken central Indiana, USA, mid August.

    Utah lizard for ID

    Plateau Fence Lizard (Sceloporus tristichus).

Under current (but disputed) taxonomy, Western Rat Snake (Pantherophis obsoletus).

    Hawk - Northeast Illinois

To be honest my first gut reaction was Broad-winged, but I suppressed it because of the paucity of local birds. However, looking at my older Wheeler & Clark photographic guide, I see a pic of a Broad-winged gliding that has a virtually identical shape and wing set (happens to be a dark morph...

    Hawk - Northeast Illinois

Understood, but if RTH was expecting to see dark patagial marks at least on the first pic, and they don't seem to be present.

    Hawk - Northeast Illinois

This 2nd pic of the same bird just became available.

    Hawk - Northeast Illinois

Although the area is clearly in breeding range, Broad-wingeds are uncommon around here outside of migration. Not impossible, but we consider it a pretty big deal when we see one June - August.

    Hawk - Northeast Illinois

This is a cropped pic of a high-flying hawk along the Illinois/Indiana border about 5 miles south of Lake Michigan, on June 7.

    Help for id, S California

Hi Niels. I only have a minute here. First two are Western Fence and Side-blotched. I will come back later today and look at the others. Actually, I think the rest are also all Side-blotched. Scalation not as rough as Fence.
