    Merlin and skylark

Skylarks do sometimes keep singing when threatened by the likes of Merlin - I believe the theory is that they are saying "look at how fit and strong I am: you've no hope of catching me".

    Winterwatch 2024

Yes, I enjoyed Wednesday's episode much more. As said by others, a good variety of wildlife and fewer silly jokes.

    Winterwatch 2024

Overall I was a little underwhelmed by the first episode. Did they have to bang on so long about Waxwings ? OK, they're a special bird, but they took almost 20 minutes to talk about them.

Is Slimbridge wetlands the Mecca of bird spotting in the Uk?😄

Amazed that no-one so far has mentioned Minsmere. Some years ago it would have been tops, in England at least. Has it gone downhill ?

    Robins nesting

I would agree with Kits: don't interfere with the nestbox now your Robins are apparently using it. One thing I learned from bitter experience is that some predators will watch you to find out where nests are likely to be. Hope it all goes well.

    Mute Swan - original distribution?

I know Wikipedia is not always reliable but surely it can't be wrong when it says "Mute swan subfossils, 6,000 years old, have been found in post-glacial peat beds of East Anglia, Great Britain. They have been recorded from Ireland east to Portugal and Italy, and from France 13,000 BP (Desbrosse...

    Mallorca 2024

Yes, many thanks to you, Mike M, for keeping this series of threads going. I can't travel these days but I have many happy memories of Mallorca, and watching these threads always helps to bring them back.

A Year of Birdsong (Cozens & Floyd)

Thanks all. I must admit I haven't paid much attention to the illustrations; it was Mr Couzens' text that I'm finding interesting.

A Year of Birdsong (Cozens & Floyd)

I've just been given this book as a Christmas present. I hadn't heard of it before, and can't find any mention of it on here. At first glance it looks good, and a bit different. Anyone seen it ? Any comments ?

A few from Staines Reservoirs - London

Sorry if I'm hijacking, but ... when I was starting out, around 1959, I spent many happy hours at the Staines reservoirs learning the birds. Glad to see the old place is still performing.

Excellent report Stewart, thanks for posting.

How did this started for all of you? (And my little story of how I got into this amazing hobby)

I started in 1958, on our first family holiday to the Highlands of Scotland. We had a little brown book called 'The Observer's Guide to Birds', and my Dad said 'Let's take the bird book, we might see something'. How right he was. On our first day, he stopped the car for a while, and there on a...

    Little Egret

Hotspur is right to ask, Markbury - the less common (in England, anyway) Cattle Egret is much more likely to be seen among among your cows.

    Springwatch 2023

Maybe they could, but it would cost way too much. Autumnwatch is going for that reason.

    Bee-Eaters on UK telly programme

And you can hear Great Northern Divers (Common Loons) on programmes from anywhere (including southern England in summer).

    Mallorca 2023

Quite right Phil. You can see from your pic why they're called "Black-bellied Plover" in America.

Dawn chorus the sounds of spring

Well, now I'm confused. I saw from the closing credits that this program was recorded in 2015 ! Still, nice to see (and hear) it - all the scenes were in my home county of Devon so that was appealing.
