I think these are all Bryotropha affinis, but would welcome a second opinion ...

    Indistinct Pale Mottled Willow?

Or a more exotic migrant? Or indeed, something competely mundane that I've overlooked? Many thanks Andrew

    Pearly Underwing?

Is this a Pearly Underwing? It was a little small (I measured the forewing at 17/18mm), the mohican is not prominent, and I didn't particularly notice a pearly sheen on the underwing. However the contrasting fringe on the hindwing didn't look much like Turnip Moth to me. Any pointers...

    Well-marked scops

I would appreciate people's views on these. I have largely steered away from identifying scops until this year, but I am rather enjoying it now I've started. Not that I think I've got that far with it yet... 1. I am tending towards basistrigalis, mainly because it was noticeably larger than...

    Cloaked Minor?

This looks to me to be Cloaked Minor, but I haven't had it before in 9 years' garden trapping here, so I thought I should check. Andrew

    Paraswammerdamia nebulella?

I find this a difficult group, but I'm tending towards Paraswammerdamia nebulella for this - anyone any views as to whether it's identifiable from the photo, and if so whether I'm right? Many thanks. Andrew

2014 moths for ID or confirmation

I prepared a Picasa album of the moths I recorded last year for which I would appreciate ID or confirmation, largely for the benefit of the county recorder, but if anyone here is interested your views would be much appreciated. The album can be found here. Comments can be posted on the...

    Two macros - Kent

These two baffled me this morning. I thought the second looked familiar but couldn't locate it. Forewing lengths approximately 13mm and 17mm respectively. Any help gratefully received. Andrew

Anyone got any pointers on these? 1 was in the Vercors region, early July. 2,3 was in Gascony, early August - have seen quite a few of these 4 was in the Pyrenees, early August 5 was in Gascony, early August. Any help gratefully received. Andrew

    SW France, August Micros

Any assistance with these would be much appreciated. All in the deparment of Gers in the first half of August. The second one I think is a micro, but I've looked at Geometridae too and can't find a match, which seems a bit odd for a well-marked moth (and relatively common). Front end of the...

    Black Moth, France

I didn't think this one would take long to identify, but it's stumped me. Possibly it's a melanic form of something, but I haven't found a good match for the shape. It was caught in SW France in August. I've fiddled around with the levels in the second photo to try to reveal some detail. Andrew

    Caloptilia alchemiella/robustella?

Not sure which these are - I am tending towards alchemiella, but would appreciate others' views.

    Miscellaneous August Moths

Here are a few for id or confirmation: 1. I think this is Bryotropha affinis, but am not familiar with it. 2. Don't know. Mompha sp? 3. Currant Pug or Wormwood Pug? Or too worn? 4. Lychnis or Campion? 5. I think this is Rosy Minor, but possibly Cloaked Minor? Any assistance gratefully...

    3 Torts

Assistance on these three would be appreciated. I think the first two may be Apotomis betuletana, and the third possibly Eudemis profundana, but I am by no means sure. Andrew

    Mompha lacteella?

Anyone any views on whether this moth is identifiable? I am not familiar with either M propinquella or the rarer lacteella, but this one seems to be a possible for lacteella given the head/thorax colour - contrasting with the white on the wings. It was taken in July near Brecon, close to where...

    Mothing camera?

Hello all. I need a new camera for mothing, and would appreciate any suggestions. I have a Canon A650is which has broken. I quite liked it - generally easy to use, but for micros the results were generally not that good. In fact, my old Nikon Coolpix 4500 was usually better for micros (but...

    Anyone for Dark Chestnut?

Here are a couple of possibles for Dark Chestnut photographed recently. Trapping (Heath trap) in some mixed woodland on top of the North Downs last night Chestnut was the commonest moth with 7 - all well marked like the third photo here - the moth in the 2nd photo stood out. 1st photo was in...

    July torts, Kent

Some unidentified tortrixes from last year, all early July. Any help gratefully received. Wing length of last two was 6 and 9mm respectively. Andrew

    Odds and ends

Just tidying up my moth records from 2010, and help would be appreciated on the following: 1. I think this is Cochylis atricapitana, but would like confirmation (31 May); 2. Is this Common White Wave? The straightness of the cross-lines indicates this to me, but the colours seemed a bit...

    Caterpillar

This was found indoors in February. Not sure where it came from, but it may well have come attached to some imported flowers. Andrew

    Micros

A few unidentified pics attached: 1. Just hoping it's not a caddis fly... 2. Dark form of Prays fraxinella? 3/4. Eudonia angustea? 5. No idea. Andrew

    pseudo carpets

These two I guess are Brindled White-spot, despite trying to look like carpets. Both middle of July in a coniferous wood. Am I right in assuming that carpets wouldn't have antennae as feathery as this?
