    UK Beetles for id

Mark, I'd love it to be a curta, to go alongside my first ever recorded Rhopalus subrufus in Staffordshire, but I think the lunicollis looks most likely. Fantastic guide you have there! Carl

    UK Beetles for id

They were sat in 4 foot of mud and water on reeds surrounding a fishing pool. Problem is, most of the Donacia seem to like that habitat! Thanks again for the assist!

    UK Beetles for id

Cheers, er, Bob? :) Book only has vulgaria in, and although body shape fitted, colour didn't. Will have a look further. Harpalus looks good too! Thanks again! Carl

    Lord Howe Stick Insect

I watched it with my partner last night. As we currently have 13 recently hatched Indian Sticks, it was fantastic to see the emergence, moreso with the rarity factor!

The Natural History Of Staffordshire: Fauna and Flora

First moth of the year for me this evening, in flight at the car park of West End Village - obviously a refugee from Nick's!

    the nasty party?

Of course, to the average MP, the countryside is either a) somewhere to shoot things or b) a taxpayer paid for second home.

    Feather, UK

Thanks for the prompt reply - wouldn't be the first woodcock nabbed by our pair, a colleague of mine found remains last year! Cheers again, Carl

    Feather, UK

Basically, we've peregrine's and I found this fellow on the ground beneath their roost spots. Sorry about the quality as it's from my phone...

    Olympus Om-d E-m5

Yup! Not sure about this release mind. The E series dslrs weren't a great success, against the flocks of canikon releases. They hit a vein with the Pen, so decide to reinvent the much loved OM series, but not the mount. What next? Olympus M4/3 Plate camera?

    Olympus Om-d E-m5

I'd sell as many children as required. Mind, I've none of my own so would have to round them up off the street first.... ;)

Kodak not fairing so well after many years of tradition

Tradition keeps Morris Dancers active in small numbers. Afraid it won't help them win Britain's Got Talent. Kodak stuck with film, far too long to allow them to make headway against the flood of sensors from Sony, bodies from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji and others. Too little, too late...

A change in the law? SSSI

My personal feeling is that there are laws out there, that if enforced, could pull the country out of the mire. Every lamppost has "£1000 fine for dog littering" yet to get to the river trent, we have to do the doggy-doo-dance. Likewise, fishing illegally, use of motorvehicles where they are...

    Sony a35

Woah, 2 Sony's in Devon - getting to be a hotbed there! SW has picked a good starting point, especially as it doubles up as a very fine lens for butterfly and dragonfly work, but there is always a but. 300mm is rarely long enough. Both SW and myself own 500mm lenses and even then, get a little...

    Future Birding Gadgets?

Tele-taser - for those birds that don't sit still long enough for id purposes? And also dual purpose use in hides? :D

    Sony A65

Dalcio, When the original SLT's were announced A33/55, Sigma announced that a number of their lenses wouldn't work properly, ie, sticking aperture, without rechipping. In some countries, they offered this free, in others, like UK, they'd charge an admin fee, if they could do the job. Older...

    Sony A65

Alex, be very careful with Sigma and slt compatibility - I've an A55, and steer clear of Sigma gear just because of the issues they've had.

    Not looking good for Olympus

With legacy camera makers it goes one of two ways, buy out the name, tech, etc by an electronics firm, as Sony did to Minolta, or join forces with a second legacy maker, ie, Pentax/Ricoh. If the former, then Panasonic would seem to be the obvious choice.

Does a budget macro lens exist?

On the a-mount, it was reknowned as the "Plastic Fantastic". Slower than my Sigma 105mm to focus, but god was it sharp and worked perfectly on my old KM5D!

    BT Internet

Henry, the Yahoo element (our email provider) has been upgraded and it may be the cause of your issues. I've not used the page log in for about 4 years mind, as my email is all sourced through Mozilla Thunderbird. Carl

Does a budget macro lens exist?

Jon, My first foray into macro work was with a Vivitar 100mm F3.5 - as is, it's 1/2 life size, but comes with a matched multiplier to take it to 1:1 reproduction. Also badged as a Cosina - mine brand new, was £75....Sharp as a pin too. Carl

New Canon DSLR the 1D X

Locked up, fixed focus and exposure. So only useful for tricky, glacial landscapes from a sturdy tripod then :)

    a65 and a77

Well, the A77 even with fixed exposure at top whack of 12 fps can still track a moving object - this line from a report on the new 1Dx "And that 14fps is achieved with the mirror locked up and the focus and exposure locked on the first frame – strictly a tripod job or one for a steady hand, with...
