    Thanks, everyone!

Hi all, I just wanted to say thanks to all the people who helped with my previous post on our next step after a Pentax Papilio. We ended up with the Opticron Traveller BGA ED 8x32, and all I can say is that they’re exactly what we were looking for. Great size and weight, lovely clear and sharp...

Next step up from our 6.5x Pentax Papilio?

Thanks. That’s actually another reason I’m leaning towards the Opticrons - they have even more ER than the Monarch 7, I believe. I don’t think I can justify the Swarovskis or Monarch HGs.

Next step up from our 6.5x Pentax Papilio?

Thanks all. I think the porro’s just aren’t quite light/pocketable enough, and the Swarovski’s don’t have enough eye relief for glasses which limits their use among our family. I think the front runners are probably the M7s or similar: Good: Nikon Monarch 7 8x30, £279 Better: Opticron...

Next step up from our 6.5x Pentax Papilio?

Those seem to be in the USA, and I’m in the UK, so I think most of the £60 saving would go shipping. But they look like a good alternative to the Monarchs, if 20% extra is worth it.

Next step up from our 6.5x Pentax Papilio?

Thanks, both, that’s incredibly helpful. So what does the 32 give over the 30? I assumed it would mainly be more weight, but the Opticron Traveller actually looks similar, and the fov is basically the same too. Is it simply that the image is brighter, or is there more to it? And I’m always...

Next step up from our 6.5x Pentax Papilio?

Hi, We currently have a pair of Pentax Papilio 6.5x (version 1). We love them for their close focus, compact size, light weight, and ease of handholding - basically anyone in the family can use them for anything they want to look at. However we find that it can be hard to pick out details on...

    ED50 and 27x MC - Use with a phone?

Thanks. So a phone mount like that PhoneSkope would work just as well on an MC as a DS eyepiece?

    ED50 and 27x MC - Use with a phone?

Hi, Really sorry for the stupid question. I have a Nikon ED50 and the 27x MC eyepiece. I picked that one as it’s used by all the family, so the good eye relief, wide f.o.v. and twisty eyecup makes it easy for everyone to use. However we’d like to be able to take the odd photo through it with...

Ultra-compact, cheap, and works with glasses? Is it possible to have all three?

Thanks - I didn't appreciate that about eye relief measurements. I know Bristol Cameras have a new showroom, so I'll check it out next time I'm getting some film developed. Maybe they'll stock the Olympus and Kowas too. I really do need smaller - it's often a case of having to leave the...

Ultra-compact, cheap, and works with glasses? Is it possible to have all three?

Thanks everyone, this is really helpful. I'm not really sure how to test eye-relief, but on my Papilios I can clearly see the sharply defined circumference of the imaging circle with my glasses on. I see no more if I take my glasses off and extend the eye cups. I assume that means that its...

Ultra-compact, cheap, and works with glasses? Is it possible to have all three?

Thanks - that's exactly the sort of honest advice I came here for. Given I cannot get good eye relief in a smaller size than the Papilios, then I might as well stick with them, should I not?

Ultra-compact, cheap, and works with glasses? Is it possible to have all three?

Hi, Many years ago I was buying binoculars as a present and the advice I got here was brilliant - they are still being enjoyed to this day. Thank you very much. Given how great you were, I'm back - but with a rather different requirement this time. I travel a lot, and am looking for some...

    If you had £250...

Well, I went into a local camera store, and tried all they had - and bought.... The Swift Audubon 828HHS 8.5 x 44 They were my favourites - nice weight, size, good with glasses, liked the 8.5x, bright image, and optically pretty much perfect to my untrained eyes. Thanks for all the help guys...

    If you had £250...

Okay - I've tried some! I have managed to try a few binoculars. Their stock wasn't very good, but as this is my first time trying any I tried a whole range to get my eye in. Nikon Sporter I 8x36 DCF - didn't really do it for me. Smaller then the Equinox, but just as heavy, so less nice to...

    If you had £250...

I thought a scope would be better, so I asked in the scope forum. Then most people recommended binoculars, so I asked here, as it's the binoculars forum. (The scope thread seems to have moved on now to a discussion about eyepeices which has totally lost me anyway. They seem to be having fun...

    If you had £250...

Wow! Thanks for all the replies everyone! It really helps. There are glasses wearers who are going to be using the binoculars - does this make a difference? I thought you could move the eye-cups to compensate? Are some of the models suggested better for this than others? The Pentax I found...

    If you had £250...

And I've seen Canon Image Stabilised binoculars. Are these too expensive for my budget, and are the optically any good? Am I better off spending the money on glass rather then technology? Thanks! Oh, and Merry Christmas! :bounce:

    If you had £250...

Hi, I'm sorry this is yet another 'please recommend' thread, but I am COMPLETELY swamped by all the information. :h?: I am trying to buy a present for a family member - I have a budget of around £250. I would like binoculars that first and foremost produce a lovely big, bright image. I...

Reasonably priced, bright scope for Christmas.

Thanks for all the tips. A lot of people seem to be leaning towards binoculars as a better alternative. Do binoculars give enough zoom and let enough light in with their smaller front element? If they do, what would people recommend for about £200-250 (Unfortunately think my budget just got...

Reasonably priced, bright scope for Christmas.

Thanks - Ebay - I can't get it at work... But I'll check it out as soon as I get home! Thanks for the tip!

Reasonably priced, bright scope for Christmas.

Wow, so many replies! This forum is amazing. Thanks - I think I need to clarify, as it seems the more detail the better. The scope is not for me, but I might be able to borrow it occasionally, that is why I was asking about the camera adaptor. It is absolutely bottom on the requirements...

Reasonably priced, bright scope for Christmas.

Hi, I really hope somebody can help me out here. I would like to buy a scope for a relative of mine to use to look at birds and wildlife. I have started looking into scopes, thinking my background in photography would help me out - but I am much more confused than I had hoped. The scope is...
