Common Greenshank in Veracruz, Mexico ?

I am convinced, that all Yellowlegs are Greater...especially standing next to the Stilts, their size is that of Greenshank, and the bills are too long and strong for Lesser... I'm especially puzzled by the leg colour on the bird in front ... can Yellowlegs be that dull? Jens

Common Greenshank in Veracruz, Mexico ?

On 17 March 2022 I visited Playa Juan Angel, just north of Heroica Veracruz on the Gulf coast of Mexico. There were a few waders roosting on a small jetty at the rivermouth - Stilts, Willets and Greater Yellowlegs - and I took a few photographs of the flock before walking further inland...

    Birds of Bolivia

I ordered mine from Future Generations University back in January, via the website, and had no problem with shipping to Denmark...but it wasn't cheap. Took maybe 3-4 weeks to arrive. Jens

Odd Slaty-backed Gull from Hokkaido, Japan.

Last year I visited Hokkaido in early June, and in Rauso Harbour I checked out the local gull roost. Mostly Slaty-backed Gulls with single Glaucous-winged and Black-tailed Gull as well, but one gull didn't quite fit in. Plumagelike it looked like a 4th cal. Slaty-backed Gull, but the jizz was...

    April ...free time

Could also be a good time to visit the Gulf coast in Texas, after a cheapish flight to Houston. Warblers on migration as well as waders and lots more …. even on a quiet day with no 'fall'.

Camping at Barrow and Gambell in June.

Just had a message back from UIC, and as ovenbird43 stated, you can camp and access the tundra with the 150USD land use permit.

Camping at Barrow and Gambell in June.

I reckon I would have to pay for the permit in any case, to be able to access the tundra, and any dry spot would do. I am mostly interested to know if there is a no-camping-allowed attitude like on St Pauls. Jens

Camping at Barrow and Gambell in June.

Trying to keep costs down in Alaska, I was wondering if it is possible to spend a few nights in Barrow and Gambell in a tent in June (?) I've got the equipment to battle the wind, rain and cool temperatures, but I already found out, that I'm not allowed to camp on St Paul island - contrary to...

    Pink-footed Goose in Morocco ..... in 1953?

On facebook, someone posted a picture of a metalring, he had found while using a metal detector in the mountains close to Tangier, Northern Morocco. The ring, with the inscription "Reykjavik 1767" could be traced back to 1953 (se below) Gudmundur A. Gudmundsson This ring [Reykjavik 1767] is...

    Bringing binoculars into Saudi Arabia.

With (electronic) tourist visas now being issued to a long list of nationalities, a trip to the SW mountains seems like a very interesting idea, with Yemen currently being out of bounds. There are a few very interesting trip reports on cloudbirders by expats working and living in Saudi Arabia...

Unidentified (Calliphox) Woodstar sp at Camarones, Guajira, Colombia..

Hi all, thanks for all your feedback …. I know it's a diificult subject given the distance of the bird in the photos and the lack of knowledge on female/immature plumages in litterature, but it's certain, that it's a Woodstar and it is out of range/habitat. Even if it is 'just' a Santa Marta...

Hej Niels, that doesn't make it any easier ;);) Jens

Unidentified (Calliphox) Woodstar sp at Camarones, Guajira, Colombia..

I agree that the amount of rufous on the rump would suggest female Gorgeted Woodstar, but that would be even more out of place than Santa Marta Woodstar. It could also be the rufous undertail coverts showing above slightly lowered wings, in which case Santa Marta Woodstar is back on...

Unidentified (Calliphox) Woodstar sp at Camarones, Guajira, Colombia..

On 7 May 2019 I was birding the dry shrub near Camarones, on the Caribbean coast in Northern Colombia, when I noticed a small hummingbird perched in the top of a bush some 25 meters away. I quickly realised, that it was one of the Calliphlox Woodstars, in female/juvenile plumage, due to the...

Unidentified (Calliphox) Woodstar sp at Camarones

Selv go'morn Niels, I had thought of this, but felt it was more appropriate in the Colombia section, as it would target a rather narrow group of users with (hopefully) more knowledge of this group of birds. Looking through various field guides and online photos hasn't made me less confused, as...

Unidentified (Calliphox) Woodstar sp at Camarones

No, you've got the right Camarones....and Woodstars are definately not part of the usual hummingbirds there. Whichever Woodstar it is, it's way off course, even if it is a Santa Marta Woodstar, which breeds maybe as little as 50-75 km away, but in a very different habitat. Jens

    Western India Jan 2019

Harike and wintering Yellow-eyed Pigeons (up to 2000) are mentioned in Krys Kazmierczak ''A birdwatchers guide to India. It was published in 1998, but when I visited in March 2003 I didn't see a single one there (!) Jens

Olrog's Gull in Bahia Blanca, Argentina

Looking at records on eBird there seems to be birds present year round, maybe except January and February, but anywhere along the coast, around estuaries and fishing harbours, could be worth a try. cheers Jens

Day tours from Mombasa or Malindi ( Kenia )

Hi Dieter, I birded the area on my own a few (10!) years back, and birding on your own was easily doable, but to see some of the scarcer specialities in Arabuko Sokoke, I hired a guide for a day, who also arranged for a car with driver. The report can be seen here. cheers Jens

    Easy/reliable Snow Finch sites

Nemrut Dagi in SE Turkey is also worth a visit, with Snow Finch around the statues at the archeological site on the mountain top. Supporting cast in late May early June is not too shabby either, with Kurdish Wheatear, Cinereous Bunting, Pale Rock Sparrow, Rose-coloured Starling, Sombre Tit and...

Northern Saw-whet Owl in Morton Arboretum

Hi, I'll probably have a chance to go for this continuing bird during Easter, and would like to know, if anyone has some more specific details of it's whereabouts. On eBird it mentions the Conifer Trail. Cheers Jens
