Best places for birding AND snorkeling

Definitely some excellent suggestions throughout this thread. New Caledonia has a been a highlight for me. Lifou as well as Isle de Pines are both great for snorkeling and birding. The main island shouldn't be discounted either - with the chance to see Kagu and an amazing barrier reef it's...

    Birds you don't like...

Ostrich. There's just something about them. Have you ever watched one go to the bathroom? Their intestines look like they're inverting out of their cloaca! Not to get religious - but even the old testament calls them abominations to god. The males do have a pretty cool courtship display though...

    Guide in Ocho Rios

Hi all, I will be taking a cruise in October that stops in Ocho Rios for a day. Usually I'm forced to split my cruise time between birding and "relaxing" on the beach with my wife. This time my wife's family is coming along - so while they enjoy the beach, I can devote all my time to birding...

    Australia 🇦🇺 in January

It's been almost 20 years, but when I lived in Townsville I loved heading up to Paluma National Park. It's a great little patch of rainforest with Victoria' Riflebird, Golden Bowerbird, Spotted Catbird, Chowchilla, Noisy Pitta and plenty of other rainforest endemics.

    Your Birding Anniversary

June 8, 1989. My dad gave me a pair of binoculars for my birthday. I added 51 life birds to my list that month!

    Tandayapa/Bellavista/LasTangaras

Quick answer, I don't know that I could choose between the three! I've worked closely with, and stayed at, both Bellavista and Tandayapa (I've also visited Las Tangaras for their Cock-of-the-rock lek but have never stayed there). All three are fantastic birding destinations! The great thing...

Advice for my holidays in august: pantanal or Ecuador

Hi Glimmer, Definitely a difficult decision! Both are fantastic for birding and have a lot to offer as far as scenery, culture, and wildlife. Having live in Ecuador and only visited the Pantanal I might be slightly biased, but if it's your first trip to South America I would definitely say...

Black Harrier - Cape Town area

It's been a couple year since I lived in Cape Town, but West Coast NP was always my go-to for Black Harrier. You should have a decent chance just driving along R27. Plus, there are some other great birds along the Darling Flower Route so it's definitely worth spending a day in the area! Cheers...

    Bird Guide in Havana

Hi all, I have just booked a cruise that includes a stop in Havana! We're two birders and two spouses traveling so need to balance our birding with general sight-seeing. But, being that it's CUBA we would love to try at a few of the endemics if possible. To complicate things, we're all...

Prion sp (between Australia and New Zealand)

Thanks for the help. I'd been leaning in that direction but thought there might be too much black on the tail. It might still have to go as an unknown though.... Cheers, Benji

Prion sp (between Australia and New Zealand)

Hello all, I was hoping for some help with a prion species seen while sailing from Australia to New Zealand. Unfortunately, the photo is not the best and doesn't really seem to show the bill. However, any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Cheers, Benji

    Samoan Starling

Sorry for the late reply (internet access is pretty slow on the cruise ship). The photo was taken on Oct. 16th (2013). Cheers, Benji

    Samoan Starling

Well, this might not be the best photo, but after a brief outing in Apia I figured the least I could do was try to add another to the database! Cheers, Benji

    Qaqortoq, Greenland ID please

Thank you all for the help! There were also plenty of Snow Bunting around town - a bogie bird I had been wanting to see for years! Luckily, that gave me my one lifer for Greenland! Cheers, Benji

    Qaqortoq, Greenland ID please

A photo would indeed make the ID easier! I'm working on a ship and our internet isn't always reliable - apparently it doesn't like attaching bird photos....

    Qaqortoq, Greenland ID please

Hi all! I had the opportunity to stop in Qaqortoq, Greenland the other day and snapped some photos of this little guy. Any thoughts on ID? He doesn't seem to quite match with anything in my books. Thanks for the help! Cheers, Benji

    Raptor outside Ushuaia, Argentina

Thanks for the help! That was my initial thought but I couldn't reconcile it with the depiction in Birds of Southern South America. Cheers, Benji

    Question on posting Photos

The reason, as I understand it, is that photographing birds in nests often involves getting close to the nests themselves. This can adversely affect the birds breeding either by disturbing the birds themselves or attracting predators to the nesting site. No bird nest photos are allowed as a...

    Buenos Aires - which Mockingbird

Definitely a Chalk-browed. Those are by far the most common around BA. The thick brow-line with the stripe through the eye are good ID points. Also the lack of white in the wing - though that's a bit hard to see for sure in this photo. Cheers, Benjamin
