    Costa Rican snake

Thanks both for your input. I think it's a Mexican Lyre Snake Trimorthodon tau.

    Costa Rican snake

A friend has sent through this photo of what he believes is a Fer-de-Lance. I'm not so sure. The real thing has a dark crown and a dark line running back from the eye, both of which this snake lacks. I don't think the head shape is right for a pit viper, plus the other markings aren't right. Any...

    Seafield to Kinghorn

This is what's been fished out: a Mallard!

    Seafield to Kinghorn

That's awful news, especially after they've been displaying this week. We'll try and retrieve the body and see if we can find out what happened to it. Thanks Paul.

Sony RX10 1V the new boy.

Thanks Gi, that's very clear and I'm grateful to you. One thing that's infuriating me is that when I select MR2, in which the focus is set to Flexible Spot S, the green focusing rectangle is invariably in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. Trying to shift it up to the middle using the...

Sony RX10 1V the new boy.

So I'm trying to set up the recommended settings for BIF and perched birds as per the article in dpreview quoted by GiG. I think I'm programming them into custom memory 1 and 2. How do I recall them? I thought it would be by pressing the C1/C2 buttons but that doesn't work. Also, when setting...

    That's ideal, thanks GiG.

Sony RX10 1V the new boy.

Many thanks Niels and Malcolm. I think you're absolutely right about my nose! That never occurred to me. I too am finding wide focus the next setting for flight shots, glad to get another opinion.

Sony RX10 1V the new boy.

Looking for some advice on this camera please. What is the best focus setting for birds in flight shots? And in centre focusing mode why does the focus square sometimes appear in a corner? Surely centre means centre, end of! Thanks.

    Tideline Woodcock corpses

During recent surveys for seabird corpses here in Fife there have been a few Woodcocks found on the tideline. Now I hear a report of 30+ being found on a Northumberland beach a few days ago. Any suggestions as to what's happening?

    Seafield to Kinghorn

All very valid points Paul and some sensible suggestions there. Let's see if anything can be done. I've written in the first instance to the site manager at the Ecology Centre asking for details of previous incidents and what he knows about any previous approaches to the Scottish Carp Group...

    Seafield to Kinghorn

That's a fine photo Paul! At midday there were four Med Gulls on the loch (3 adults and a 1st winter) and a Grey Wagtail by the sluice (is that on the list?) Delia I gather than the cause of the cygnet's death was a fishing hook. This is at least the third such incident here in the last three...

    Seafield to Kinghorn

Nice photos from the Loch Paul. I'm very envious of the Dipper. Apparently the Ring-necked Duck has decamped to Beveridge Park!

    Seafield to Kinghorn

Hi Paul Sorry not to have got back to you sooner. I've been waiting on the Birdtrack records for the Loch which have now been kindly supplied via the Fife Bird Club. If you PM me your email address I'll send them through, although it's just a species list without details of sightings and I...

    Seafield to Kinghorn

Hi Gander Living in Burntisland and having a dog to walk, I visit Kinghorn Loch several times a week, so I regard it as falling within my patch too. I also used to be on the board of the Ecology Centre and still occasionally contribute nature-related stuff to their website (although not for a...

    Seafield to Kinghorn

I had a look for your Dipper yesterday Gander and found it upstream just beyond the viaduct. Nice collection of trolleys too. By the way I had 40 Purple Sandpipers at the harbour when I did the last WEBS count.

    Seafield to Kinghorn

I walked from Kinghorn to Seafield Tower yesterday. Amongst a bunch of Black-headed and Herring Gulls loafing on the rocks about halfway along were two adult Mediterranean Gulls, probably two of the three I saw on the mudflats off Burntisland during the previous week. It looks like this is a new...

    Tayforth Birding

We went to the Eden Estuary Centre on Saturday afternoon. Scanning the very distant shoreline, I spotted a White-tailed Eagle perched on a post. Even at that range it was obvious. After a few minutes it flew right and landed on the mud, then up again and away over Tentsmuir. An adult bird but...

Can someone let me know please how I find my way to the most likely place to see the eagles on the Eden Estuary?
