Large white-headed gull, Northern Sri Lanka

Hi I was in Sri Lanka over Christmas. Saw a large flock of gulls, most of which were Pallas' (about 3700 birds) with some that I assumed were Heuglin's (70) plus Brown-headed (500) and some Caspian Terns (100). To help me better estimate the numbers of each species, I photographed the flock in...

    RFI wader/shorebird sites near Jaffna

At the end of December I am taking a tour of Sri Lanka. I have visited before and seen a lot of the sites for birds covered in standard tours. This time I will have two-three days in the north where I want to explore coastal areas to locate waders. Birders are only just starting to explore this...

Owls of the World - A photographic guide. Comments?

I've not seen any reviews / comments on this book yet. Interested to know people's thoughts now that many will have picked up a copy at Rutland Bird Fair. My initial thoughts are that it is a great book but that some of the species splits seem a little tenuous and at times confusing/lacking...

Any help to identify this, much appreciated. Was sent the picture to identify by my niece... and I've let her down. My thoughts were bullfinch but think I'm missing something more obvious. Ken

    San Francisco stake-outs RFI

Hi there Spending a few days in San Francisco with my non-birding partner 7th-13th April - my first trip to the West Coast and only my second US visit. I have found lots of good info online on general birding in and around the city and will certainly be spending as much time as I can in Golden...

    Slovakian Bears

Not sure if this project has been mentioned before on here, but it looks really interesting. Tracking bears to try to understand their interactions with people and how to avoid conflict. Thought people on here might be interested... http://stunningslovakia.com/projectbear.html#news18 Ken

    Slender-billed or BHG? Catania, Sicily

I think I know the answer and am actually quite embarassed asking as I've identified loads of Slender-B gulls on holiday before... I think the habitat has thrown me (a roof top) and perhaps the posture (it didn't look too well). What do you think? Pics are cropped but no other jiggery-pokery. Ken

Oak trees still in leaf - December

All over Dorset, UK, I can't help noticing oak trees (not evergreen/holm) still in almost full leaf. The leaves are for the most part brown but still some yellow-green ones. Any ideas why they haven't fallen? Is it linked to the early cold snap or perhaps disease? Does it mean there is still sap...

    Best guide for China

I know this one's been asked before... but mine is a rather specific request... Which book for Cuba?

    Neotropic or double Crested?

Just been sent this pic from a friend travelling somewhere in the Bahamas, not sure which island. Instant thought: I was sure it was Double Crested Cormorant on jizz if nothing else.
