    Northumberland 2nd October

Thanks. That was my first thought, but it didn't look quite right (there were two of them and they both looked the same). Keith

    Northumberland 2nd October

Hi, I am sure this should be easy but I cannot make my mind up what this bird is. Mallard sized but dark beak and eyeline are confusing me. I am sure it is nothing special, but I would still like to know what it is. It was on the sea. Thanks for any suggestions. Keith.

Croatia - Wood Warbler or Chiff Chaff?

Thanks. I wasn't expecting migrating Willow Warbler at that time in Croatia so missed it. Saw a pigmy cormorant which was nice.

Seen round a coastal lagoon near Sibenik 22nd September. Seemed very yellow, particularly eye stripe. Thanks

Thanks. I didn't realise some blackcaps also stayed here for winter. On its third visit it stayed long enough for a quick picture. Keith.

    Yorkshire Birding

Hi, Would you expect blackcaps to be here now? I thought they were just summer visitors but I have one coming into my garden at the moment. Thanks. Keith.

    Yorkshire Birding

Keith, Many thanks for the information, it is very helpful. I had been through half a dozen of my books and seemed to end up more confused than when I started. Keith

    Yorkshire Birding

Thanks Keith. When do they normally have winter plumage? Keith (confusing having another Keith).

    Yorkshire Birding

A bit of a dumb question, but do adult Guillemots have a winter plumage with more white on them? I thought so, and my books say so but there are loads of adult breeding plumage birds at Flamborough and hardly any 'winter plumage' ones. I wasn't really expecting to see breeding plumage birds. Are...

Tophill Low? Is there much around at Tophill Low at the the moment? Not looking for any rarities, just a good mix, or is it too early? Thanks. Keith.

    Yorkshire Birding

Yes, my father used to tell me that and I STILL can't tell them apart without the help of a book. I do, however, know how to tell a buffalo from a bison. You can't wash your hands in a buffalo.3:-) Keith.

Sorry! I normally go by the black tip on the tail. Even then I can never remember which is which. Keith

Thanks all for the advice on Tophill Low. Had a good day in spite of the drizzle (and coach load of birders). Saw a bittern - life first. Thanks to the helpful people there pointing it out to me and my wife (Watton hide). Keith

    Yorkshire Birding

Geoff, I realise I won't get a proper ID from my brief looks so far, but the wing shape is all wrong for a sparrowhawk. Also I haven't seen sparrowhawks this small - not much bigger than blackbird. I did briefly think I saw the same bird on Wednesday but it was a quick flash that time...

and I am seeing barn owl(s) quite a bit in the daytime now as well. Keith.
  22. keith1200rs

    Yorkshire Birding

I do see sparrowhawks quite often - a lot bigger, fast flight in the wooded areas but not close to the ground. This was definitely no bigger than a kestrel. Got a sparrowhawk in front of my lounge window a while back: Keith.

    Yorkshire Birding

Thanks for the link. It seems possible. I would like to see it with my binoculars next time instead of it flying in front of me while I am pedalling! Keith.

    Yorkshire Birding

Merlin Anyone know how likely it is to see a merlin around Cloughton (on old Scarborough to Whitby railway line)? Saw something today (actually yesterday as it's now tomorrow) I didn't recognise - smaller than a kestrel, grey back & wings, pointed wings, very low, fast flight just a few inches...

Waxwings in my garden this morning. They don't seem to be settling but I managed one shot (with a camera;)). Keith.
