    Zuiko 100 - 400 vs 300

Dear all I bought the 100 - 400 lens as when I got the OM1 I was about to go on a trip to Uganda and so needed a wide telephoto range for larger mammals that were fairly close. I am now considering changing to the 300 mm as most users find the AF considerably better, the images sharper and the...

Arca-Swiss compatible quick release plate for Gitzo GHF2W

I've just splashed out the money on this and very much want a second quick release plate as it will regularly be used with two different scope. I am keen to avoid adding another 50+ quid to the cost. I know it should be compatible with any Arca-Swiss compatible plate but does have any...

    Manfrotto XPRO Fluid Video Head

Reading through the threads here the Manfrotto 500 head is clearly very popular but I wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this one, which is slightly lighter and cheaper, compared to the 500? It would be used with a 65mm and 82mm scope. Thanks Steve

    Whale trips Monterey in February

Anybody been on one of these in February? It'd would be good to have the flexibility of not booking in advance but I don't want to risk not getting a place. Does anyone know if this is likely to be an issue at this time of year?

Unusual ways that you have seen good mammals.

This is a blatant copy of a thread in the birds and birding thread but, reading that, I realised most of mine seem to be mammal related. Here are some of mine. 1987 Venezuela - we were wild camping in some rainforest. Obviously toilets facilities were non-existent so we had to do what bears do...

An orchid and a broomrape from Provence

I'm fairly sure that the orchid is Late Spider, but I am aware that Ophrys orchids in Europe are rather harder than the UK so confirmation would be appreciated. I haven't really got much of a clue with the broomrape. Any help appreciated,

Dates of edited photos Affinity photo

Dear all I do feel that I am probably going to feel stupid and this is something obvious but if I look at photos either on OM Workspace or if I hover over a thumbnail with photos that I edited earlier in the year I get the date the photo was taken not the date it was edited. However if I look...

    Very cheap binoculars

I have been asked for advice on a pair of binoculars for a keen birding child. The mother was rather vague about budget but I suspect it is going to be very low. Can anyone suggest a very cheap pair of binoculars at around the £50 mark?

A couple of beetles from Suffolk

Can anyone help with these from July? I'm pretty confident the first one is Viburnum Beetle Pyrrhalta viburni but would appreciate confirmation or being corrected; I'm a lot less confident with the second one, possibly Crepidodera aurea. Thanks in advance Steve

    Binocular strap for 8 x 32 bins

Sadly the strap for my Zeiss FL 8 X 32 died of old age recently. I replaced it with a cheap one but that is not as comfortable. The £45 for a new Zeiss one seems a bit excessive. Anyone have a good suggestion for a slightly cheaper but comfortable one?
