    eastern pa. Hawk Mountain

Went to Hawk Mountain in eastern Pa. last weekend and although a beautiful day, in the five hours there was not a great deal of activity. Found out with the high pressure system and light breezes makes the birds fly high over head. The best migrations occur after a front passes through. sort of...

    pine island Audubon N.C.

went kayaking in the Pine island Audubon area in N.C. last week (before Irene) and came across wrens but unable to identify. They did not sound like the Carolina but am unable to match songs with it. Any ideas for this time of the year and what they were. A very faint eye bar but larger than...

    breaching whale

My wife and I went on a sailing excursion off of the coast of San Diego. After watching a whale surface right alongside the 39 foot sailboat we tacked and followed her out into the ocean. After a double deck party left the area the whale put on a breaching show that was fabulous. The captain...

    The Pond

I have always wanted to build my own little bird sanctuary and 32 years ago it started with 5 acres. The first thing I built was a pond in 1980, 125 feet by 180 feet tear drop shape. The birds that it has attracted over the years have been amazing from the cedar waxwing to the American bittern...

Never realized how beneficial native plantlife is until attending meetings at the Audubon and reading. Twenty years ago our local game commission sold non-native shrubs (Russian olive) to plant and now they want to erradicate them all together. Has anyone out there switched to native plantlife...

    screech owl update

The red phase of the eastern screech owl showed up again. She must have been on eggs for the past weeks. Got the picture this time and will download when I figure how to do it. So the two phases are breeding, I assume the red phase is the female, and now I am waiting for the fledglings to...

    yuppie ponds.

I have heard more and more stories of people building there cute little garden ponds and putting coi or goldfish in them, which is fine, but then killing, complaining or attempting to kill the great blue herons that come into feed on the fish. These ponds are a buffet table for the herons. the...

    screech owl.

Earlier I had put up a thread about a screech owl that had taken up nesting in a box I had put up. For two weeks a grey one was seen in the hole toward the evening hours. The red one had not been seen for weeks. Now I have not seen any but the starlings that have came back look into the box but...

    hawk mountain

If you visit pennsylvania in the fall and like birds of prey a must place to go is hawk mountain sanctuary in eastern pa. It is a huge ravine where three valleys come together. The updrafts there let migrating birds fly and soar using little energy. In the early 1900's hunters use to go there...

    screech owl phases

I have screech owls taking up residence in a nesting box. This morning I am looking at the grey phase of the owl and yesterday the red or rufous phase was looking out at me. Is this possible that the two colors would breed or is one male and other female, which of course is most likely. When is...
