ID Help - Colorado, USA, 07/2021

My brother sent me this photo asking what it was and I'm stumped. He said he was at 11k elevation above the timberline in southern Colorado on the Conejos River and it was hoping around on the rocks. He said it was finch size. My first thought was a Black Rosey Finch and I saw on...

    "Nightstalker" - Barred Owl

"Nightstalker" pyrography (wood burning ) and acrylic on basswood round, 13"x9" inches, 2021 After finishing up Quotations, I was inspired to pull out some of my photos and used a Barred Owl I'd taken at the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center. This bird was an education bird (a bird that they...

    "Quotations" - Raven

"Quotations," pyrography (wood burning) and acrylic on basswood round, 9"x13" inches, 2021 (pending sale!) I started this one last year (2020) in July after an ileostomy reversal and got most of the it done except the insane detail in the throat. I got intimidated and let it sit until April...

    ID Question: Colorado, USA

I lean towards a Black-billed Grosbeak for this guy, but not everything was quite "right" compared to the photos and illustrations I've seen. Any help is appreciated!

    ID Questions: Colorado, USA

I lean towards Townsend's Solitaire for this one but would appreciate any thoughts!

    North Texas Duck ID

My wife sent me this picture and i'm baffled as to what it is. Taken today, 05/23/17, in a suburban pond/park area near Denton, Texas, USA. She said it's super friendly and hanging out with them. I suspect maybe domestic but figured I'd ask the experts here first! Thanks!

    Week on the Silver Thread

So last week my brother and I ventured up to the Silver Thread Highway in Colorado, USA (Hwy 149 between South Fork and Creede) and I decided to try and make a list of what I saw. No particular order, though I will say my species count increased dramatically while kayaking the Rio Grande river...

Bird ID, Wagon Wheel Gap, CO, USA

My brother and I were hiking back up into the Rio Grande National Forrest. Of course, while I had my camera out I didn't see anything, but when it as in the pack, the Steller Jay's, Flicker's and every other manner of birds was out. So back deep up a creek I see this guy and it poses for me...

    Bird ID, Stonewall Colorado, USA

So I THINK this is a Western Bluebird, but being from Oklahoma, living in Texas, it's not something I'm super familiar with. The two adults had blue on their backs and wings, though a lot more grey than the google pictures I've done so far. I also have some photos of some immature individuals...

    Colorado Hummingbird ID help!

I took this on 7/11/13 in Wagon Wheel Gap, CO (South-central highlands) and am trying to ID this hummingbird. I was thinking Broad-tailed, but some of the examples on line don't line up. I've attached the photo, thanks for your help in advance!

    Possible Swainsons Hawk, Plano TX

Saw this guy soaring above the Arbor Creek Nature Preserve in Plano, TX and snapped off a few photos after my run. I'm pretty sure it's a Swainson's Hawk, though I've been wrong in the past |^|

    Red Tail Hawk (subspecies?)

Okay, I've seen this guy several times in the same park area hunting. He/she's not affraid of humans and let me and my dinky 55-250 get pretty close for some close shots and a nice fly-by. Anyway, I was wondering if this was a Harlan's Hawk subspecies or not; I can't remember really...

    North Texas Sparrow

I'm 98.9% sure this is a Tree Sparrow, but I wanted to make sure. I've had six of them take up residence today at my feeders in the snow and cold. I'm terrible with sparrow ID's but I'm pretty sure on this one. Figure I'd make sure before posting it up to my gallery! Thanks!

North Texas ID question (no photo!)

Sorry for the lack of photo; I've gotten my wife interested in birding via feeders I've put out and she saw a bird that I was unable to see. She described it as a solid chocolate brown with a long slender sharp beak. She said it was tiny and would fit in your hand without an issue. The name...

    North Texas Shorebird and Sparrow

I saw both of these together at the end of a concreate boat ramp. I'm clueless on the shore bird, but I was thinking maybe a savannah sparrow for the other. I've always been terrible with just about every sparrow so... I could easily be wrong! Any help would be appreciated!

    Hawk ID, Western Oklahoma US

I've seen this species twice; neither time getting a great photo of it. Sadly this photo was the best of the lot with low lighting (incoming thunderstorm) while my good lighting photos never show the head. The back was the same color as the head, a dark grey. I'm normally good with my hawks...

    Sparrow ID: Western Oklahoma, US

I'm terrible with sparrows that aren't white-capped or the common house variety... I don't really have any idea's! Saw this one at the old Cowden Gym in Cowden, Oklahoma, US over Christmas week. Thanks for your help!

    Raptor/Osprey

I saw this guy in far southeastern Oklahoma back in October. He had a trout in his talons and flew over, but my camera didn't cooperate till just this moment. The rest of the photos are even worse, but I think it's an Osprey. The area doesn't match any of the maps, though I guess it could be...

    Another Sparrow...

I'm pretty sure on this one (Harris Sparrow) but thought I'd double check as I can't recall ever seeing one before. He was hanging out with a bunch of White-Crowned Sparrows in my in-law's burn pile (that hasn't burned since well, I helped them move out there!) Thanks for any help!

    Cormorant ID check (Texas)

We have a bunch of these guys staying at the neighborhood lake I've been shooting at and I was just double checking that this is a Double-Crested Cormorant (probably still immature?) These were taken north of Dallas on a wooded pond with a river and Lake Lewisville within 300 yards give or take...

    North American Sparrow ID (Texas)

Hey guys, I'm terrible with sparrows; I blame growing up with way too many House Sparrows around. I snapped a series of pictures of the following. I THINK I've narrowed it down to either a Vesper Sparrow or a Song Sparrow, but from the books to the picture, I can't really tell much of a...

    V-day weekend (lots of pictures)

My wife and I decided to take a plunge (for us) and get a decent camera and telephoto lense (cannon Rebel ESX and a 55-250mm image stablizing lens) so I went out to play with it. This is mainly ducks as I'm doing that for an art project (high school art teacher) but here are some of the...

    Unknown Duck, North Texas, USA

I was out today shooting some ducks (with a digital camera!) and came across quite a few of these guys; this particular picture is isolated from a group of this species and Mallards, with some Lesser Scaup's and Northern Shovelers mixed in for good measure. I thought it was some sort of a Teal...
